AELIANA
I escaped.
I got desperate, and when my Dad spoke to Mama Bird, they were going to think of something, but I knew their process would have been long, so I talked to Mama Bird myself. We spent two days planning it, and no one caught on, not even Evelyn, and she’s always around me.
I suggested that we travel quickly, and Mama bird indulged me. She had someone cut out the main power supply, and that was enough of a diversion for us to slip out. I met with Damien outside the institution, and he drove us to Mama Bird’s niece, and from there we went home.
Dad wasn’t home, but Seraphine was, and this time, I didn’t attack her. The last thing I wanted was for her to go and tell Audrey about me being home and have Audrey tell Kingston I was home.
I couldn’t sleep all night. I kept thinking Kingston would come to find me, but he didn’t. The rest of the day went by pretty fast, and even though I was locked in the house, I felt free somehow. Chef Tanya made me cookies, and Seraphine went out and bought me a few outfits I could wear.
Everything was fine, I thought I had succeeded and gotten away with everything, but while we were making plans on moving me somewhere else, Kingston’s car pulled up in the driveway.
Seraphine dragged me into the hideaway Dad built the day after visiting me. We have been here for the last few minutes, watching from the surveillance cameras Dad put up. For a while, they just stand there, and I can see Maddox and some other man searching certain rooms of the house as well as interrogating the staff. When they return, Kingston starts hitting my dad.
“No,” Seraphine pulls me from the door.
“He’s going to kill Dad.”
“He won’t kill him,” she shakes her head, wincing at the screen. “At most, he will get beaten up badly, but he will heal.” She swallows. “You have to hide, you won’t get another chance, two months is still too long for you to go back to staying in that shithole.”
I pause, “You are the reason I got sent to that shit hole.” I groan. “If you didn’t fucking fall then—” I pause, my attention stolen by the contents on the middle screen. The screen is too fucking big for me to ignore. I can clearly see how Dad is getting tossed around. “No, I can’t watch this.”
“You have to leave, Aeliana,” Seraphine says, her tone desperate. She has been wanting me to leave despite hearing how the borders are blocked. “He doesn't love you, okay? You need to go,” she tells me, once again panicking. It’s like she has something to gain if I leave. She knows that if I go, then Audrey has access to Kingston, and Seraphine would do anything for her. They have this sick bond that I will never understand. “Go to Clinshore again, or anywhere, but not here. ”
“Why are you saying this?” I frown. “Why are you so adamant about me leaving?”
“They treated you like an animal that day,” she says. “They…” she pauses, remembering whose fault it was that I was dragged away. “I am sorry for spawning on you without notice, but listen. Father is okay,” she tells me, turning me away from the screen. Her hands drop from i glare at her for touching me. “He is silent to keep you safe, so don’t ruin it, just leave Mooncrest.”
“I can’t leave, Sera.” I groan, “They are looking for me, he is right there!” I yell. “How can I leave?”
“We will go out back,” she nods. “And I will sneak you out in my car, no one will suspect that I have you.”
I lean back on the table, my hand pressing on a few keys that bring sound from the footage. “Bring her out, or I'll slit your throat,” Kingston says. “You have up to the count of three before you drop dead.”
I quickly turn around, my gaze zeroing in on the silver against my Dad’s neck. “One,” he begins to count, pushing against his neck, hard enough to draw blood, but Dad doesn’t speak. He groans in pain, but he doesn’t say anything.
“Kingston, maybe he doesn’t know where she is,” Maddox says. “I mean, we searched the house, She’s not here.”
