It doesn’t take much for me to decide on making his fears come true, and once the thought settles, I can’t let it go. “I would rather die than go back there,” I tell him, bringing it to my wrist. “I want my life back, stop taking it from me.”

His eyes shift to my father, “You see what your bright idea did?”

“Aeliana,” my father gasps. “Sweetheart, give the blade to me.” He coos, putting his hand out.

“No, I’m going to cut myself.” I swallow, my hand trembling. “That’s what he wants, right? He wants me dead, so let me speed up the process. At least let me die on my own terms.”

“Aeliana, look at me.”

“No.”

“Ellie,” Maddox calls. “Can we talk? Just put the blade down, and we can reconsider things. We’ll all talk. Hmm? How does that sound?” He smiles, his voice panicked.

“I don’t want to talk anymore,” I shake my head. Even he betrayed me, he didn't listen, he didn’t defend me, he let that asshole Eleanor and her team paint me unstable, and I’ve been just that since. “I’ve been begging to come home for so fucking long, and he did nothing! He walked away from me.”

“I’m sorry, baby. You’re right,” he says, but I don’t look at him. “I hurt you, but I just want to protect you and I—” he gasps. “If you hurt yourself, I’ll die, Aeliana. I can’t exist in a world where you don’t, so baby, please don’t do this, please.”

“Aeliana, if you do this, if you slit your wrist right now, you’re only proving them right.” Dad tells me, “You’re proving what they said, you can’t do that, you are not crazy.”

“I’m dead.” I suck in a breath, tears finally slipping free as I let go of the blade. It clatters to the floor, and Maddox rushes to grab it.

I drop to my knees in defeat, and Kingston falls with me. “Oh Goddess,” he sighs with relief, wrapping his arms around me. “You’re okay,” he says, the words unsure.
