“That doesn’t make this any better, Ellie. I failed you, I failed our pup.”

God, arn I about to be the bigger person again? It’s my turn to feed him the reassurance he keeps feeding me even if we both doti’t believe it. “You haven’t,” I swallow. “And you better not, or, I swear to God I’ll gut you.”

His gaze falls. “Our pup isn’t growing like it should.”

“I know,” I nod. “I was there at the hospital.”

“I’m sorry,” he chokes out, the words broken. “I didn’t mean for any of this.”

“I need you to pull yourself together, that can not happen again.” I shake my head, the possibility of what would’ve happened had he not turned back breaking my heart. “You can not become the Alpha who loses himself and romes rogue. Do you know how dangerous that was?” I rasp, the tears falling again. “You get at your lowest and just let your wolf overpower you? Kingston, what the hell is wrong with you?!”

“Everything I thought I was doing for you turned out

“I know!” I sob, “And I also know you’d change it if you could, but you can’t. We can’t do anything about this now.”

He cups my face in his trembling hands, swiping the tears from the corner of my eye. “What use is it being here if I can’t protect you?” He asks, his voice low and unsure. “Jagger can.” He says, tears rolling down his face when he wipes mine away.

I’ve seen Kingston go through some of both the worst and best moments of his life, I know every emotion he is capable of. He is the most resilient person I know, arguably the strongest not just in terms of physical brute strength, but emotionally too, he handles himself well.

I haven’t seen him cry in….I don’t remember the last time I saw him cry. When I almost died, he was livid, broken, but even in that moment he didn’t cry, he held the tears back, but now? He’s crying. We both are.

“I need you whole,” I blink the tears away. “I don’t need the part of you that is Jagger or just Kingston, I need you whole. That’s what you promised you’d always give me, and it’s the one promise you’ve kept.” I sniff. “Are you going to break it now?”

“No,” he swallows, more tears flowing as he wipes mine away.

“If you do, then you’ve failed me again.” I suck in a breath. “So please don’t. I don’t think I have one more in me either, be here.” I tell him, pushing at his chest. “We’re supposed to figure this out together.”

“I’m sorry,” he nods. “I’ll keep a better handle on my emotions.”

“It’s unfair that you always want me to come to you, but you don’t do the same. Does this communication thing only work from my end to yours because ever since I came back, you want me to use my words, you want me to speak my thoughts, but you never tell me yours outside of reassuring me I’m overthinking things.”

He nods again. “I’ll do better.”

“You have to,” I nod. “You can’t sweep things under the carpet. No one is that strong, King, and don’t try to downplay this because I know what I’m talking about, I’ve been here. At first, it was when Professor Elingham, then the whole time I was in therapy, and now it’s this.” I shrug. “You’d rather be mad and resentful than talk to me.”

That makes two of us.

“Yeah, I’ll check on my Noah.”

“Will you be back?”

I do want to be back. More than anything, I want to be in his arms right now. I want to take that shower with him, but the smaller fraction of me that remembers he walked away from me demands I be petty. It wins. “No, you left me on my own for two fucking days. I’m not going to sleep with you just because of that.”

“It won’t happen again.”

“It better not.” I nod, walking away before he can convince me or I feel sorry enough to stay with him. I hear him. mumbling something.

“What was that?” I frown, pausing at the door.

“Nothing,” he shakes his head. “You look very pretty in that shirt, and you’re wearing shoes.”

I nod. “New habit.”
