Chapter 503
ROWAN
Noah passed out in my arms.
I tried not to freak out, but it’s impossible when I have her blood on my clothes. Her nurse went to the ER with her, giving the doctor her medical history before she came back out again.
Anastasia, as I’ve learned her name, is very jittery. She’s been trying to get a hold of Noah’s father, but the man seems to have gone somewhere with no cell service. I too try to contact her brother, but it doesn’t go through, so I leave him a voicemail.
“Has this happened before?”
“Not really,” Anastasia bites out. “But she’s been very stressed lately. I’ve told her to take it easy, but she never listens.”
I nod.
Noah is stubborn, she doesn’t exactly take advice, more so when she doesn’t ask for it. “Do you think-” I swallow the rest of that sentence. I can’t bring myself to ask the question, I’ve been worried about her, but the last time that she was here, the baby was doing fine. “She’s okay, right?”
Anastasia nods, “She’ll be fine. Don’t worry too much, she’ll be fine.”
I nod. She’s very repetitive about it, but she’s her nurse, so if anyone knows, then she must know, right? I’ve already been through this with Danielle, and it wasn’t pretty. Losing our child left us both with a hurt that hasn’t gone away, more so Dani. There are days when she locks herself in the bathroom to cry, and whenever I try to comfort her, she insists it’s normal for her to cry, it’s how grieving works, and we never
talk about it.
Caleb slaps a hand on my shoulder. “Rowan, are you okay?”
“Yeah.”
“You don’t look like it.”
“I’m worried about her,” I swallow. “She bled a lot.”
Caleb lets out a deep breath, motioning across, “There’s the doctor.” He blurts out, so relieved he doesn’t have to console me. It’s definitely a hard place to be, I myself don’t know anything that can ease my worry right now, nothing but hearing she’s okay.
“Noah Fren?” The doctor asks.
“That’s me!” I blurt out. “I mean–I’m–I’m her-” I pause. What exactly am I to Noah? Her baby’s father? Her mate? Her friend? She hasn’t let me be any of those things in a long time, I can’t claim to be either one without recognition. “Is she okay?”
