Chapter 93
I swallow, hands balling into fists.
Her face lit up when she saw him, and she hasn’t looked away from him once. Not even when Lexie took them refreshments.
Although no longer smiling now, she is still paying attention to him as if nothing else matters. Something coils in my stomach, and creeps into my chest, wrenching at my his chest.
“I don’t think-really?” Rowan gasps.
Audrey lets out a heavy sigh. “My instincts are never wrong but if I am? Aeliana is lucky to have someone who makes her forget everyone else in the room. I wish I had that…” she trails off. ” Oh wait, we all have that, it’s called love.” She snickers, “Oh look, here they come.”
Aeliana rises from her seat, and so does the strange man, he grins too widely at something that she says and they come inside.
“Act natural,” Rowan clears his throat. “No glaring, Audrey, say something.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“Keep rambling nonsense,” he says.
“Hey, I do not rumble,” she snaps, proceeding to ramble nonsense. “You just don’t find me entertaining because you’re used to bleak chatter, and questionable dismemberment jokes from your wife.”
“Perfect,” he nods. “So insightful, as always.”
“Hey,” Aeliana pauses. “Can I borrow your car?” She asks. “I want to drop Professor Ellingham at his hotel.”
I swallow down my rage, “No need, Rowan can drop him off.”
“No, I want to do it.” She says, “He came all this way to see me, so it’s the least that I can do.”
“Professor Ellingham,” Audrey sweetly calls. “Hi, I’m Audrey Cole, a friend of Aeliana’s.”
At that, Aeliana’s face twists with contempt. Proff nods, offering a small smile. “Nice to meet you.” He says, his voice heavy with an accent.
“You too,” Audrey says. “Forgive me if this is weird, but are you married? You look so much like the groom at a certain wedding I went to a few years ago, a friend’s cousin had gotten married and I was the plus one.’
I wait for his answer, “No, I’m not married Miss.” He says with a slight shake of the head. “You’re mistaken, I’ve never been married.”
“And you’re such a catch too,” she says, giggling. I turn to look at her, unable to tell if she too is attracted to him. What about him has the ladies giggling? “But surely you must be dating someone?”
“Shut up,” Aeliana snaps. “You’re crossing the line, you do not bombard a stranger with questions that are none of your business.”
“I was just trying to get to know your friend.”
“Yes, mine.” She nods, “Not yours, don’t get any silly ideas. You and he aren’t in the same intellectual bracket so the friend of my enemy thing wouldn’t fly.”

“Wow,” Audrey winces. “That’s what I get for being nice.
Aeliana turns to me, her hand out. “Kingston, keys, please?”
I don’t think twice before reaching into my pocket and giving her the keys. I tell myself she is just dropping him off, she will be back, they’re nothing to each other, she’s mine. She’s mine, and she knows it, right?
“Thanks,” she gives me a half smile, one that doesn’t reach her eyes. It makes me uneasy. “I’ll return it in ship- shape condition.” She says, leading him out hurriedly. I don’t know what he says to her, but she laughs so loudly from outside that I hear her.
Audrey tsks, “The car might return in shipshape, but will she?”
“What?” I snap.
“Audrey,” Rowan growls, warning.
