Chapter 13 His Underwear
By the time Natasha accompanied Jared to the private room, night had already fallen.
“Sorry, we’re late,” Jared said, his tone polite but his face showing no sign of embarrassment.
All the bosses in the private room stood up, greeting him with utmost respect.
“Mr. Rundell, no need to apologize. We just got here early. You arrived right on time.” The bosses all put on their best smiles.
Natasha’s mouth twitched.
‘Seriously? We’re an hour late, and these guys are acting like they showed up early?’ Natasha thought.
It was obvious these people were just trying to get in Jared’s good graces.
“Please, Mr. Rundell, take the head of the table,” one of the bosses said, gesturing to the spot at the table
“Really, I shouldn’t. You’re all senior to me; it’s only right you take the head seat,” Jared said with a modest smile.
After some back-and-forth, Jared finally settled into the head of the table.
As his assistant, Natasha naturally took the seat right next to him.
After she settled in, Natasha realized that all the bosses had brought female companions along.
Every single one was young and gorgeous-definitely not their wives or girlfriends.
Once dinner got underway, the bosses kept signaling their dates to try to win Jared over.
If Natasha guessed right, these guys had probably planned to introduce their companions to Jared tonight.
But they hadn’t expected Jared to show up with Natasha by his side.
With Natasha there, the bosses couldn’t openly push their companions at him, so they just had the women send Jared flirty looks from across the table.
But Jared didn’t even bat an eye.
He was all business with the bosses, ignoring everything else.
Luckily, the business talks went off without a hitch, and the bosses were grinning from ear to ear.
“Looks like we’ll be heading to your company next Monday to sign the contract,” one of the bosses said.
Jared nodded, then turned to Natasha. “Get everything ready. Make sure these gentlemen are properly looked after.”
“Mr. Shaw, you’re a man of your word. Here’s to you,” one of the bosses said, raising his glass.
The others quickly followed suit. “Here’s to you, Mr. Rundell.”
Jared raised his glass in return. “Come on, everyone, bottoms up.”
Natasha joined in, raising her glass.
After a few rounds of drinks, the business talk was pretty much wrapped up.
The bosses brought in a few more girls, and soon they were laughing left and right, women hanging off their arms as they told raunchy jokes.
Natasha couldn’t take it anymore. She made up an excuse and slipped out to the restroom.
Her stiletto heels clicked against the marble floor as she walked.
On her way to the restroom, Natasha spotted a familiar figure up ahead in the hallway.
It was Joelle.
Joelle had her back to Natasha, one hand holding a cigarette, the other holding her phone as she chatted away.
She didn’t even notice Natasha.
Natasha didn’t want to make things awkward for herself, so she turned and headed for another restroom.
Suddenly, she heard Joelle yelling at Percy over the phone.
“Percy, can you stop bothering me lately? We almost got caught at that bar last time. If my mom hadn’t paid off the paparazzi, the Milford family would’ve called off the engagement!” Joelle snapped.
“What? So what if they call it off? Do you even Successfully unlocked! ‘m put in to secure this engagement with the
Milford heir?
“You? What makes you think you’re good enough to marry me? You’re just a bastard-someone like you is only fit for

Natasha, that bastard daughter born to a mistress.
“Alright, alright, just drop it. I’m going shopping in Tamont with my mom tomorrow. I don’t have time to see you’
Natasha paused, her brows knitting together.
She never expected Joelle would be on the phone with Percy-and even throw shade at her.
‘So I was right, Natasha thought. ‘Joelle totally despises Percy for being an illegitimate child. There’s no way she’d ever agree to marry him.
‘So I was just Percy’s backup all along, just a stepping stone for him to get close to Joelle.
‘I just never saw it before.’
When Natasha got back to the private room, the place was already rocking with music and laughter.
She was heading over to Jared when someone suddenly called out, “Mr. Rundell, how about you and the lovely lady with you sing a song together for us?”
Before Natasha could even react, someone had already shoved a microphone into her hand.
‘Wait, they actually want me to sing with Jared? What’s going through their heads?’ Natasha thought, feeling awkward and confused.
‘Do they not see I’m just his assistant, not some date?’
Natasha instinctively glanced over at Jared.
Jared sat there, holding his glass, staying silent for a while.
Seeing that Jared wasn’t responding, Natasha jumped in to smooth things over. “Don’t put Mr. Rundell on the spot. Let me sing solo for you all instead.”
The crowd started egging her on, cheering and teasing, and even picked out “Women are the Easiest to Hurt” for her.
As soon as the music started, Natasha instantly regretted it. Singing this song right now was way too fitting-it hit a little too close to home.
Especially the lyrics-they felt like a mirror to the ache buried deep in her heart.
“I still feel your kiss from last night, but I can’t tell if it was real. I miss you as dusk falls, and there are still tear stains on my face. If I stopped caring, stopped clinging to you, maybe the night wouldn’t feel so cold, and my heart wouldn’t hurt so much…”
As she reached the end of the song, something in the lyrics struck a chord deep inside Natasha, and before she knew it, her thoughts drifted to Percy.
But with the room full of people, Natasha managed to keep her emotions in check and finished the song all the way through.
Silently handing back the mic, Natasha turned-and was startled to find Jared standing right behind her.
Their eyes met, and he immediately caught the shimmer of tears in hers. He felt a sudden pang in his chest.
‘Who was she thinking of just now, while she was singing?’ Jared wondered.
Natasha quickly looked away, annoyed at herself for letting her emotions get the better of her.
‘Can you believe it? I sing a song and my mind goes straight to Percy.
‘A guy who betrays you should be dead and buried, never to be remembered.
‘But Percy wasn’t even someone who betrayed me, she realized. ‘He never loved me-not even once.’
On the way back, Natasha sat by the window in silence, not saying a word.
She watched the city lights flicker past outside, completely absorbed in her own thoughts.
“Where to, Mr. Rundell?” the driver called out from the front seat.
“Take her home first,” Jared said.
The driver glanced at Natasha. “Ms. Whittier, where do you live?”
