Chapter 140 Pretending to Be Asleep
Chapter 140 Pretending to Be Asleep
‘I can’t just sit next to Jared again. What’s that even about?’ Natasha thought to herself.
She turned to Dorothy, lowering her voice, “How about we swap seats?”
Dorothy shook her head without hesitation. “No way. I always get nervous around the higher-ups. And Mr. Rundell? He’s strictly the look-but-don’t-touch type.”
Natasha was at a loss for words.
She was about to ask another colleague to swap seats, but before she could make a move, Jared was already standing right in front of her.
She didn’t even have time to say anything before Jared walked past her, not sparing her a single glance.
He headed straight to the last row and took the window seat.
Now, he was only two seats away from Natasha, and the seat between them stayed empty.
Natasha went completely still, frozen in place.
She could barely breathe.
In that moment, she only felt that Jared was so close.
The bus quickly started moving.
Natasha spent the whole ride quietly leaning back, her eyes closed, pretending to sleep, afraid to disturb Jared, who was sitting nearby.
But Dorothy, sitting right next to her, kept sneaking peeks at Jared every few seconds.
Dorothy was still buzzing with excitement.
She whispered, “Oh my god, I can’t believe I’m actually on the same bus as Mr. Rundell.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought Mr. Rundell would be sitting right next to me. Nat, pinch me! Am I dreaming or what?”
Natasha rolled her eyes, clearly exasperated. “Seriously, can you not be so dramatic?”
Dorothy grinned. “This is literally the first time I’ve ever been this close to Mr. Rundell.”
She leaned in, whispering, “Do you think I could secretly snap a handsome pic of Mr. Rundell?”
Natasha just rolled her eyes again.
She couldn’t bear Dorothy being so infatuated.
“Suit yourself. We’ve got a few hours left, so I’m gonna catch some sleep,” Natasha muttered.
She then took out the eye mask she carried in her bag, put it on, and prepared to sleep.
Dorothy glared at her in frustration. “Seriously, how can you be so relaxed? Our boss is sitting right next to you, and you can actually sleep?”
Natasha didn’t respond, just kept pretending to be asleep.
‘It’s not because I’m relaxed; Natasha thought. ‘It’s exactly because Jared is right beside me that I have to act like I’m sleeping.
‘Otherwise, I’d have to face him right now. What on earth would I even say?’
She honestly had no idea how she was supposed to face him right now.
But even with her sleep mask on and her eyes shut, she was acutely aware that Jared was right there next to her.
She could feel the tension in the air pressing down on her.
Falling asleep was easier said than done with him so close.
About half an hour later, Natasha heard Dorothy next to her rustling open a bag of snacks.
She could hear Dorothy crunching on chips and cracking open a soda, taking noisy sips, then going on to snack on a bunch of other treats.
Natasha couldn’t get any sleep with all that crunching and slurping going on.
She couldn’t help but pull off her sleep mask and shoot Dorothy a look.
Dorothy gave her an apologetic smile. “Did I wake you up?”
Natasha asked, “Are you starving or something?”

Dorothy replied, “I skipped breakfast.”
‘It’s just that snacks aren’t filling me up at all; Dorothy thought.
She’d already polished off three bags of chips, and the more she ate, the hungrier she got.
With a resigned sigh, Natasha opened her bag.
She pulled out a lunchbox.
Inside were some ham and cheese sandwiches she’d whipped up that morning.
“Want one?” she offered, holding the box out to Dorothy.
Dorothy’s eyes lit up instantly.
“Wow, you actually made these sandwiches?” she exclaimed.
She grabbed one without hesitation and started munching away, savoring every bite.
She was totally blown away.
“Seriously, these are so good!” she said.
She finished it in no time, then picked up another one and looked around.
She realized that Natasha, Jared, and she were the only ones in the last row.
Dorothy shot a look at Jared sitting by the window, then jabbed Natasha with her elbow.
“Why not share one with Mr. Rundell?” she whispered.
Natasha hesitated for a moment.
Since the lunchbox was already out, it felt awkward to eat with Dorothy and ignore Jared.
Just to be polite, she handed the box to Dorothy. “You ask him.”
‘No way am I talking to Jared myself,’ Natasha thought to herself.
Dorothy gave her a confused look. “Why me? Are you really that nervous around Mr. Rundell?”
‘I mean, Nat’s his assistant. She gets to hang out with Mr. Rundell way more than I ever do. She should be way more
comfortable with him than I am. So why is she suddenly making me do it?’ Dorothy wondered.
“Nope,” Natasha denied, barely thinking.
Dorothy pressed, “Then why aren’t you doing it yourself?”
Natasha was at a loss for words.
Her mind raced, trying to come up with an excuse.
She finally managed, “Hey, I’m just giving you a golden opportunity to cozy up to Mr. Rundell!”
Dorothy smirked, “Great idea.”
Clutching the lunchbox, she mustered up her courage, made her way over to Jared, and asked, “Mr. Rundell, are you hungry? Want to try one?”
Jared remained perfectly still, like a marble statue.
“No, thanks,” he refused coldly, his voice commanding without anger.
Dorothy couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed.
Still, she braced herself and kept trying. “Natasha made these, and they’re honestly amazing!”
As she spoke, she popped another one into her mouth and started chewing.
She didn’t even have to fake it.
Her expression said it all. These things were seriously tasty.
But Jared remained completely unmoved, showing zero reaction.
His profile looked cool and handsome, distant as ever.
Dorothy could only look away, feeling a little embarrassed, and return to her seat.
Natasha already knew Jared wasn’t going to eat it.
She wasn’t really surprised.
Whether Jared would even eat something like this was always questionable, to begin with.
Plus, Dorothy had just pointed out that she was the one who made them.
