Chapter 34 He’s the Only One

Chapter 34 He’s the Only One

Natasha’s heart had ached for so long it was now numb; she felt nothing anymore.

Her hand instinctively gripped the armrest of her wheelchair. Her eyes followed Percy as he walked away, carrying Joelle in his arms.

“Ms. Whittier, do you know those two?” Leigh had hurried over, catching Natasha’s gaze on the pair as they walked away “No,” Natasha said, snapping out of it and shaking her head. With that, Natasha wheeled herself away.

Leigh caught up with her again. “Ms. Whittier, let me drive you home.”

Natasha declined politely. “Don’t bother; I can call a cab myself.”

“It’s no trouble at all. This is a work-related injury, and Mr. Rundell specifically sent me over to look after you,” Leigh said, already reaching to push the wheelchair.

Natasha’s eyes widened in surprise. “Mr. Rundell sent you?” She thought, ‘So that’s why I happened to run into Leigh at the hospital today.’

Leigh nodded eagerly. “Yeah, Mr. Rundell is really thoughtful toward his staff.”

Natasha looked conflicted. ‘But my injury wasn’t even from work,’ she thought. ‘He treated it as a work injury and sent his chief secretary to take care of me? Is there really a boss out there this nice?’

Natasha couldn’t refuse Leigh’s kindness, so she let Leigh help her into the car and drive her home.

“Ms. Whittier, do you live alone?” Once they arrived at Natasha’s place, Leigh helped her out of the wheelchair and onto the couch, then suddenly asked.

Natasha shook her head. “I live with my husband.”

Leigh blinked in surprise. “Wait, you’re married?”

Natasha frowned, not getting why Leigh was so shocked. “Yeah, what?”

Leigh felt a jolt of surprise inside. This was the first time Jared had ever sent her to look after a colleague, so Leigh had thought he was interested in Natasha.

Leigh hadn’t expected Natasha to already be married. ‘Wait, does that mean Mr. Rundell is interested in a married woman?’ she thought.

“N-no, it’s nothing.” Leigh tried to hide her surprise. “I just didn’t expect someone as young as you to already be married.”

‘Poor Mr. Rundell. He finally finds someone he likes, and she’s already married,’ Leigh thought.

“Would you like something to drink? Would coffee be all right?” Natasha asked politely.

Leigh glanced at her foot. “No need; I’ll get it myself. Just water is fine.” She went to the kitchen, poured two glasses of water, and brought one back for Natasha.

“Mr. Rundell gave you a few days off. If you need anything these days, just let me know,” Leigh said.

Natasha replied, “Thanks, but don’t trouble yourself. I have someone to look after me.”

Leigh nodded, not pressing the issue. She figured it had to be Natasha’s husband. ‘She’s married. If her foot’s hurt, it’s only natural for her husband to take care of her, she thought.

Back at the executive office, Leigh gave Jared a full report on everything that had happened today, from picking Natasha up at the hospital to dropping her off at home.

“Ms. Whittier said she didn’t need me to look after her. I figured since she lives with her husband, they must be close. Her husband would definitely take good care of her,” Leigh said.

Honestly, it was all Leigh’s assumption. She thought that someone as young and attractive as Natasha would naturally have a husband who cherished her. There was no need for Jared to fuss over her.

But the moment Jared heard that, he felt a surge of annoyance. His expression soured. He had had enough and cut her off. “That’s enough. Get out.”

Once Leigh was gone, he pulled out his phone and stared at Natasha’s name in his contacts, his mind a mess.

The night was cold and still. Natasha was hom

It was Sandra calling. Natasha had thought Sandra was finally calling because she had heard about her foot injury and

But the moment Sandra spoke, she commanded, “Joelle is in the hospital. Take half a day off tomorrow and come with me to visit her.”

Natasha’s heart instantly sank. When she had been hospitalized with a foot injury, no one had cared or looked after her But the second Joelle ended up in the hospital, both Percy and Sandra were falling over themselves to be by her side. “Who’s the real daughter here?’ she thought. Natasha gripped her phone. “Mom, I don’t think I can make it to the hospital tomorrow-”

But Sandra immediately started scolding her, not even letting her finish. “Is your job more important than Joelle? How can you be so heartless?

*Joelle is your own sister, and she’s in the hospital. How can you just ignore her like this? Not even going to see her? Does that sound right to you?”

“Mom!” Natasha interrupted her. “I’m not skipping the hospital because of work. I just got out of the hospital myself a couple days ago.

“My foot’s injured, and I can’t even leave the house right now. I haven’t been to work at all these past few days. I’ve been stuck at home.”

On the other end, Sandra paused for a moment. Then, sounding annoyed, she said, “Fine, just stay home and rest.”

Sandra hung up the phone right after she finished speaking. She never even asked how Natasha was doing.

Sandra didn’t even check if Natasha’s foot injury had been serious or if it had healed by then. It was as if whether Natasha had been hurt or not meant nothing to her as a mother.

This kind of thing had happened countless times since Natasha was a child, and she had long grown numb to it.

In Sandra’s eyes, anything that happened to Joelle was a huge deal. But even if something big happened to Natasha, it was like it didn’t matter at all.
