Chapter 35 Me Pays a Midnight Visit
Chapter 35 He Pays a Midnight Visit
Natasha replied, “It’s almost fine.”
Jared ordered, “Come to the office tomorrow.” For some reason, not seeing her these past couple of days made him feel off Natasha sounded surprised. “So soon?”
Jared said, “Aren’t you fine now? Then get back to work.” He was already itching to see her again.
Natasha hesitated. “But can’t I rest a few more days? Mr. Rundell, didn’t you promise me some time off for all that overtime I pulled last time?”
‘I’m really not ready to face him yet, she thought. Besides, her foot really did need a few more days to heal.
A hint of restraint flashed in Jared’s eyes. “Fine.”
Natasha let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you, Mr. Rundell.”
Just as she was about to hang up, Jared suddenly called out, “Wait.” He couldn’t bear to end the call with her just yet. Natasha asked, puzzled, “Mr. Rundell, is there something else?”
Jared blurted out, “Is your husband home right now?” The words had barely left his mouth, and he was just as startled as Natasha was.
‘Why on earth is he asking if my husband’s home right now? Wait, is he planning to show up here?’ Natasha thought. Her heart started pounding wildly. “Yes,” she lied.
Natasha wasn’t sure what his exact intentions were, but she figured telling him Percy was home would dodge any unnecessary drama.
A wave of indescribable disappointment washed over Jared. He let out a self-mocking laugh. He thought, ‘Seriously, what am I even thinking?
‘She’s married, and it’s this late; of course she’d be with her husband. Am I seriously thinking about sneaking in while her husband’s away?’
Jared didn’t say another word and hung up the phone. The dial tone on the other end of the line took Natasha by surprise.
‘Why would Mr. Rundell call me so late at night, only to hang up for no reason? Seriously, what’s his deal?’ she thought.

Over the next few days, Percy didn’t come home at night. Natasha spent her nights alone.
Once, she might have called him, but now she didn’t even want to say an extra word to him.
She knew exactly where Percy was. Of course, he was spending his nights at the hospital, staying by Joelle’s side.
After marrying Nicolas, Joelle was completely neglected by him. She drowned her sorrows in alcohol, drinking so much she nearly gave herself a stomach ulcer and ended up in the hospital.
But Nicolas never once showed up at the hospital to see Joelle. Instead, it was Percy, Natasha’s husband, who was busy taking care of Joelle at the hospital every day.
If someone didn’t know any better, they’d probably think Percy was Joelle’s husband.
But when Natasha was hospitalized with her foot injury, Percy didn’t even bother to visit her. Even when he saw her wheeling herself out of the hospital, he had ignored her completely.
For a husband who treated her like this, Natasha might as well have considered him dead.
The doorbell rang. Natasha glanced at the clock on the wall. It was almost eleven. ‘Who would come over this late?’ she wondered. ‘Could it be Percy, locked out?’
With Percy gone these days, Natasha had been living alone and made sure to add extra locks to the front door every night.
Still puzzled, she walked over, unlocked all the locks, and opened the door. A tall figure dressed in black appeared right in front of her. “M-Mr. Rundell?”
Natasha stared blankly at Jared, standing at her door. He was in a tailored black suit, looking travel-worn, carrying the chill of the night air.
His deep, hazel eyes were fixed on her. Natasha felt restless and uncomfortable under his stare. “Mr. Rundell, why are you here?”
Jared stood there with one hand in his pocket, his gaze intense and shadowed in the dim light, as if something were stirring beneath the surface.

“I’m here to check on you. Aren’t you going to let me in?” he said.
“Thanks for your concern, Mr. Rundell, but it’s too late. Not a good time.” Natasha stood her ground by the door, lying without flinching. “My husband is still here.”
Jared studied her, then glanced inside through the open door. “Are you sure your husband is really home?”
Natasha’s heart skipped a beat. ‘Why is he questioning me like that?’ she wondered. ‘Does he really think my husband isn’t home?’
“H-He just went to bed; Natasha said, keeping her head down and sticking to her story.
She thought, ‘It was the middle of the night, and him showing up at my door like this would look awful. I had to send him
away.’
But she never expected Jared to push the door open and walk straight in. “Mr. Rundell, what are you doing?” She gaped at him, bewildered by his actions.
By the time she came to her senses, it was already too late. Jared had strode into her place. “Go get your husband, Jared suddenly said.
Natasha froze. “What?”
“You said he’s home, didn’t you? Have him come out. I want to talk to him,” Jared said, his deep eyes fixed on her.
Natasha’s eyelid twitched. “T-Talk about what?”
Jared’s tone turned sharp. “I want to ask him why he’s not here taking care of you when you’re hurt.”
What Natasha didn’t know was that for the past few nights, Jared had been parking outside her apartment building every night.
Sometimes he’d stay there all night. But he never saw Percy enter or leave the building. Unless he somehow missed it, there was only one possibility: Percy hadn’t come back in days.
Natasha’s face stiffened. From the way he said it, she could tell he had pretty much figured out she was lying.
The truth was, Percy had been staying at the hospital with Joelle these past few days. He hadn’t set foot in the house once. And tonight was no exception.
