Chapter 36 She Told Him to Leave
Chapter 36 She Told Him to Leave
Natasha stared at Jared, utterly stunned by what he was doing. ‘How could a big shot like him linger at my place and refuse to leave?’ she thought.
Given who he was, she couldn’t exactly tell him to get out. “It’s so late, and you still want coffee?” Natasha couldn’t help but
ask.
“Is that a problem?” Jared’s deep eyes swept over her, carrying an unspoken authority.
She thought, ‘He’s my boss, and he’s gone out of his way to check on a mere assistant like me this late at night. It would be unreasonable to refuse him even a cup of coffee.’
Natasha forced a smile and nodded. “No problem at all. What kind of coffee would you like?”
“Anything is fine,” Jared replied. Since he had put it that way, Natasha had no choice but to head to the kitchen obediently to make him a cup of coffee.
Natasha put a kettle on to boil, then leaned against the kitchen counter, her mind wandering a little.
She thought, ‘Why would Mr. Rundell turn up at my place in the middle of the night? And how does he even know Percy isn’ t home?
‘Could he be investigating me? But I’m just an assistant. Is it really worth his time and effort to look into me?’
The water boiled. Natasha smelled a faint trace of tobacco wafting in from the living room.
She instinctively glanced out of the kitchen, only to see Jared had walked over without her noticing.
Now, his tall, lean frame was propped against the kitchen doorway. His long legs were slightly bent. One hand was in his pocket, the other holding a cigarette with practiced ease.
He looked relaxed and nonchalant, almost lazy. But there was an unmistakable air of nobility and arrogance about him.
Natasha mused, ‘He shows up at my place in the middle of the night, barges in, and won’t leave. Does he actually have some ulterior motive for coming here?
‘Guys like him could have any woman he wants. So why would he bother with someone like me, a married woman who’s nothing special?’
Natasha still couldn’t make sense of what he was really after. She shook her head, forcing herself to look away. She turned back to the counter and focused on making his coffee.
It didn’t take long for the coffee to be ready, and Natasha personally carried it over to Jared. “Mr. Rundell, I don’t have any fancy coffee here. Hope you don’t mind.”
Jared locked his intense, piercing gaze on her. Natasha felt her heart pounding in her chest under his stare.
Those mesmerizing, almond-shaped eyes of his were almost too much. If he looked at her for even a few seconds longer, she felt like her heart might give out.
Natasha instinctively averted her gaze. Jared took the cup from her hands. His fingertips inevitably brushed against hers as he did, sending a jolt through her.
A flush crept up Natasha’s cheeks. She hurriedly turned around, just waiting for him to finish his coffee so she could send him on his way.
“Where’s your husband?” Jared asked out of the blue, taking a sip of his coffee. Natasha tensed up, her whole body stiffening. She was momentarily speechless.
‘Why is he suddenly asking about Percy?’ Natasha thought. ‘How am I supposed to answer that? I can’t possibly tell him that Percy’s at the hospital with Joelle right now, can I?
‘Jared knew Percy didn’t come to the hospital to stay with me the night I was admitted for my foot injury.
‘If Jared finds out further that Percy would rather be with Joelle at the hospital than with me, wouldn’t he laugh at me?’ “H-He’s on a business trip,” Natasha blurted out, making up an excuse on the spot.
Jared’s eyes narrowed. “You’re injured and need someone to take care of you, and he picks now to leave you alone on a business trip?”
Natasha stammered, “Men, right? Always putting work first. Anyway, it’s not like my injury is that serious. I can handle myself.”
Jared shot back, “Not that serious? Then why have you been stuck at home for over a week and haven’t shown up at work?” Natasha was left lost for words. She thought, ‘Fine, I’ll admit it. My injury isn’t exactly minor.

‘But Joelle just had to be hospitalized right at this time. Percy has to stay with her at the hospital, so what choice do I have?
‘Even if Percy wasn’t with Joelle, I wouldn’t want him fussing over me anyway. Since we got married, every time I was sick or hurt, I always had to look after myself.
‘I stopped counting on Percy a long time ago. And I’ve never thought a woman should rely on a man.’
Jared frowned, already sensing the truth. “Your husband doesn’t look after you, does he?”
Natasha refused to admit it. “Nope.” She glanced at the cup in his hand. “Once you finish your coffee, you should go.”
Jared’s face turned cold. “You’re kicking me out?” He thought, ‘I come over out of kindness to check on her, yet she keeps trying to chase me away. Is there really such an ungrateful person as her?’
Natasha reminded him anxiously, “It’s so late. If my husband comes back from his trip and sees you here, that would cause a lot of trouble.”
Jared’s face turned even colder. ‘So that’s it. She’s worried about what her husband would think if he saw me here,’ he thought.
He fixed her with a deep, unreadable stare. He thought, ‘Her husband might as well not exist.
‘She hurt her foot, and he hasn’t come home to check on her for days. So this is the kind of irresponsible scumbag she’s
into.’
A self-mocking smile tugged at Jared’s lips. He thought, ‘Why am I even sticking my nose into this? This is just between
her and her husband.
‘Her husband has been gone for days, and she hasn’t complained once. Instead, she defends him to my face over and over again.
‘She’s so blindly stubborn about him. Why should I bother looking out for her anymore?’
Not wanting to look at her another second, Jared walked out in a huff, frustration written all over his face.
Natasha was left there all alone, utterly confused. ‘He seems mad, she thought. ‘But why on earth would he be mad?’
The next day, Natasha put on light makeup, changed into her work clothes, and showed up at the company on time.
