Chapter 38 Snatching Her Away?
Chapter 38 Snatching Her Away?
Natasha instinctively refused. “That’s not necessary.”
Nicolas smiled. “Come on. We’re going the same way anyway, and besides, Jared’s in the car too.”
Natasha might have hesitated if he hadn’t mentioned Jared. But hearing Jared was there, she was even less willing to get in. “Really, it’s fine,” she said.
“Wait, Mr. Rundell’s in there too?” Dorothy, standing beside her, had clearly caught Nicolas’s words.
Nicolas quickly said, “This is Mr. Rundell’s car.”
Dorothy wanted to get in but held back. “Maybe we shouldn’t bother Mr. Rundell.”
Nicolas said, “Then just let me help you out. I’m Natasha’s family, after all. If I leave you two here by the road, I won’t be able to explain to Joelle later.”
Seeing that bringing up Jared didn’t work, Nicolas had no choice but to mention Joelle. Natasha was momentarily sturned She hadn’t expected him to already know she was Joelle’s sister.
Jared watched from inside the car, his gaze dark and unreadable, as Nicolas chatted away with Natasha and Dorothy outside.
He didn’t know what Nicolas was saying, but Natasha, who had been refusing, hesitated for a moment before finally getting
into the car.
The back seat of the Rolls-Royce was spacious. Natasha and Dorothy sat facing Jared and Nicolas.
As soon as Dorothy got in, she cheerfully took the initiative to greet Jared. Jared nodded with a frosty expression, making it obvious he had no intention of striking up a conversation.
Natasha caught a glimpse of his stern profile out of the corner of her eye. She figured he wouldn’t even acknowledge her if she said hello, so she turned her head to look out the car window.
She knew full well how cold Jared had been toward her at the office these days. Natasha wasn’t the type to throw herself at someone who clearly didn’t care about her.
Soon, the car pulled away from the restaurant. Thanks to Jared’s cold, aloof presence, the whole car was wrapped in a tense, almost oppressive silence. “Nat?” Nicolas called out suddenly.
Jared’s brow furrowed instinctively. ‘When did they start using such intimate nicknames?’ he thought.
Natasha wasn’t really used to Nicolas calling her “Nat” so casually. She looked at him uncertainly. “Hey, why don’t you come to my stables this weekend and catch a race?” Nicolas suddenly suggested.
Natasha instinctively shook her head. “I don’t really watch horse races, and I’ve never ridden before.”
Nicolas said, “That’s okay. I can teach you.”
Natasha hesitated. “But…”
Nicolas glanced at Dorothy beside her. “Why not bring your friend along too?”
“Me?” Dorothy was surprised. She hadn’t expected Nicolas to invite her.
“Will you grace me with your presence?” Nicolas raised an eyebrow.
Dorothy had always wanted to see what a horse race was like. “Nat, let’s go together, okay?” she said, pulling Natasha closer.
Natasha was torn, but it was hard to refuse outright. “Maybe, if I have time.”
Nicolas turned to Jared and reminded him, “Jared, we’ve got plans. No making them work overtime this weekend, okay?”
Jared gave Natasha a long, inscrutable glance, his lips pressed into a thin line, saying nothing.
Jared’s Rolls-Royce drove Dorothy and Natasha home. After Natasha got out of the car, Nicolas noticed Jared couldn’t take his eyes off her as she walked away.
He teased, “What’s up, man? Got a thing for your assistant?” Jared looked away, saying nothing.
Nicolas shot him a mischievous grin. “Seriously, are you into her or not? If you don’t make a move on a beauty like her, I will.”
Jared’s brows furrowed, and he warned coldly, “Stay away from her.”
Nicolas blinked, surprised. “What’s that supposed to mean? Don’t tell me you’ve actually got a thing for her?”
Nicolas mused, ‘Jared’s always kept his distance from women, and now he’s actually warning me over a girl? Now that’s

Before Jared could answer, Nicolas went on, “She’s stunning, so it’s no surprise if you catch feelings for her.

“But let’s make it clear. We’re both playing fair here. Don’t think you can use your position as her boss to get an advantage.”
Jared’s face grew even darker. “You can chase after anyone you like, just not her.” Nicolas froze.
The look on Jared’s face turned icy, and Nicolas finally realized he wasn’t kidding. “Wait, you mean it?”
Nicolas had always thought Jared had no interest in women. They had known each other for years, and he had never seen any woman around Jared.
He even wondered if Jared had ever dated anyone at all. But now, Jared was actually warning him off over an assistant. That had never happened before.
Nicolas instantly realized Natasha held an unusual place in Jared’s heart. He thought, ‘It looks like my chance is gone for good. But it never hurts to dig for a little gossip, right?’
Nicolas said, “Dude, if you’re into her, why aren’t you making a move? Girls like her don’t stay single for long. If you wait around, someone else is going to snatch her up and you’ll be left in the dust.”
Jared’s gaze turned downright icy. Nicolas’s words cut deep, hitting him right where it hurt.
“She’s married. And she’s your wife’s sister, so keep your distance,” Jared shot back, his tone frosty.
Nicolas clicked his tongue. “So that’s what’s stopping you? She’s married? If I really wanted a woman, even if she was my wife’s sister, I’d still go for it.
“And with your status, you seriously think you can’t swoop in and steal her from her husband?”
