Chapter 41 Riding the Same Horse

Chapter 41 Riding the Same Horse

Natasha and Jared’s bodies were pressed together with almost no space between them. Natasha instinctively put her hand on his chest, trying to keep him at bay.

“Mr. Rundell, please behave yourself,” she snapped. This wasn’t the first time she had had to say that to him.

Jared was always reserved and restrained; how could he possibly not understand what it meant to behave himself? But it seemed that whenever he was with her, his sense of decency vanished.

Jared looked down at her. Her pretty face was flushed with embarrassment and annoyance, tinged with a playful anger that, made her even more irresistible.

It made him want to push things even further. Jared felt his throat tighten, overwhelmed by the urge to kiss her. And he did exactly that.

Natasha’s eyes flew wide as she stared at his lips closing in on hers. She froze. And at that very moment, Dorothy was just outside, with only a thin curtain separating them.

Natasha was so terrified she dared not move an inch or draw a single breath. She instinctively held her breath, not daring to make a sound, terrified Dorothy outside would discover them.

She thought, ‘It feels like we’re sneaking around together right now. Jared seemed to pick up on her train of thought, and instead of stopping, he kissed her even harder.

He had only meant to steal a quick kiss at first, but he couldn’t pull away the moment his lips touched hers.

It was like he was hooked, unable to resist going back for more and more. The kiss left Natasha nearly breathless.

“Natasha, are you in there?” Dorothy’s voice came again from outside the stall. Natasha snapped back to reality and quickly pushed Jared away.

“I’m here,” she replied quickly. She worried that if Dorothy didn’t hear her, she’d pull the curtain open and walk right in. “Go on out first if you’re ready. I’ll be out in a minute.”

“Okay, I’ll wait for you outside,” Dorothy replied. Only when Dorothy’s footsteps faded into the distance did Natasha let out a quiet breath.

But when Natasha looked up, she met Jared’s intense gaze. They were so close their breaths mingled in the air. Natasha could feel his hot breath enveloping her.

“Mr. Rundell, my friend is still waiting for me outside. Could you let go of me for now?” she asked.

She waited for what felt like forever, but Jared gave no answer. He kept holding her, refusing to let go. Instead, his deep, unreadable gaze stayed fixed on her.

After a long moment with no reply, Jared reached up and gently pinched Natasha’s cheek. Then he finally released her and turned to leave.

Natasha was left totally confused by the way he handled things. ‘What’s wrong with him?’ she thought.

She lingered in the dressing room for a while longer before stepping out. The wide open field came into view. The wind rustled the grass, and horses grazed with heads bowed.

Dorothy was already riding a brown horse, laughing excitedly, as if she had completely forgotten Natasha was even there.

Not far off, a few young men lounged around, sipping coffee and chatting. In the sunlight, Jared stood beside a majestic black horse.

Somehow, he had changed into black riding gear, looking tall and impossibly handsome. He was a sight to behold just standing there.

Natasha couldn’t help but steal a few more glances at him. But then she remembered that kiss in the dressing room, and her cheeks flushed as she quickly looked away.

Nicolas had been teaching Dorothy how to ride. When he saw Natasha come out, he waved at someone in the stables.

A stable hand immediately led out a white horse, following Nicolas as they approached Natasha.

“All set?” Nicolas asked, giving Natasha an appreciative once-over. He was clearly impressed by the striking red riding outfit. “You look amazing.”

Nicolas patted the white horse behind him. “This is Snowy, the gentlest horse here. Want to give it a try?” Watching Dorothy ride so happily, Natasha felt her own excitement start to bubble up.

She was just about to nod when Jared’s voice interrupted from nearby. “I’ll teach her,” Jared said, stepping forward.

Natasha froze, instinctively reluctant.

Nicolas had originally planned to teach Natasha himself. But with Jared taking the initiative, he could only step aside.

Nicolas had never seen Jared be this possessive over any woman before. “She’s all yours,” he said and walked away, leaving Natasha alone with Jared.

Natasha suddenly had a bad feeling about this. She wanted to run, but before she could come up with anything, Jared commanded, “Get on the horse.”

Natasha hesitated for a moment. “Maybe I shouldn’t learn after all?” She thought, ‘It just feels odd having Jared teach me horseback riding in person.”‘

Jared said, “Are you getting on yourself, or do you want me to help you?” Natasha’s smile froze awkwardly. She forced herself to step into the stirrup and climb onto the horse.

Just as she grabbed the reins, she felt Jared settle in behind her, his warmth and presence pressing close. She was completely caught off guard that he’d ride the same horse as her.

‘If he’s supposed to be teaching me, shouldn’t he be leading the horse from the front, not riding with me?’ she wondered. But before Natasha could say anything, Jared pulled her close, tightening the reins as his arms wrapped around her, from

behind.

His scent surrounded her entirely, and she froze, not daring to move. ‘Is it really necessary to be this close just to teach me how to ride?’ Natasha thought.

“What’s wrong?” Jared noticed her stiff posture and lowered his head, asking quietly.

Natasha subtly tried to edge forward. “Nothing. I’m just a little nervous. It’s my first time riding.”

Jared grunted in response. He pressed his legs to the horse’s sides, making it walk forward at a slow pace.
