Chapter 42 Fell Asleep in His Car

Chapter 42 Fell Asleep in His Car

Natasha felt her stomach turning upside down, and she was about to throw up. Just then, Jared jerked the reins back

The galloping horse came to a sudden stop. With the momentum, Natasha lurched forward, nearly smacking right into the horse’s neck.

At that moment, she felt a firm grip tighten around her waist. She was swept back into a broad, warm embrace. Natasha took a few quick breaths, her nerves gradually settling. Suddenly, she realized she was in Jared’s arms.

She slid off the horse right away. She didn’t care how messy or awkward she looked. The moment her feet touched the ground, she felt like she had come back to life.

Jared remained on horseback, gazing down at her from above. “You’re not done with your lesson yet.”

“N-No, I quit!” Natasha’s eyes were dazed as she instinctively shook her head. She had nearly been scared to death, and her stomach was still churning violently even now.

Natasha clapped a hand over her mouth and hurried straight for the restroom. She knelt over the toilet and retched dryly her head spinning like crazy.

‘I swear, Jared was totally messing with me on purpose,’ Natasha thought. ‘But why would a big shot like him bother picking on someone like me, just an assistant?

‘Could it be that I stared at him lecherously when I lost control earlier, and that got under his skin? Honestly, that’s gotta be the only reason.’

“Nat, are you okay?” Dorothy walked into the restroom and saw Natasha hunched over the toilet, her face pale as a ghost.

Natasha waved her off. “I’m fine. I guess horseback riding isn’t for me.”

Dorothy asked, “Want me to take you home first?”

Natasha nodded. “Yeah, that’d be great.”

Dorothy helped Natasha out of the restroom, and the moment Natasha looked up, she unexpectedly ran right into Jared.

He had changed out of his black riding clothes and was back in the casual suit she had seen him in earlier.

He leaned lazily against the wall, one leg bent casually, exuding an air of lofty nobility and coldness.

The moment Natasha saw him, all those nightmare memories from his riding lesson came rushing back. She instinctively took a few steps back.

But before she could get away, Dorothy pulled her forward and greeted him politely. “Mr. Rundell.”

Jared’s hazel eyes fixed on Natasha. “Are you alright?”

Natasha rolled her eyes inwardly. ‘Alright? I’m anything but alright. And it’s all your fault.’

Seeing that Natasha wasn’t answering, Dorothy, worried about offending Jared, quickly chimed in, “Natasha’s not feeling well. I’ll take her home. Could you let Mr. Milford know?”

Dorothy started to lead Natasha away. Suddenly, Jared spoke up from behind them. “I’ll take her home.”

Natasha stiffened, her face etched with reluctance as she looked at Dorothy. Dorothy caught on to her meaning and replied respectfully, “Mr. Rundell, we really couldn’t trouble you with that.”

Jared said, “I’m heading back anyway, so I’ll drop her off. The horse race starts soon, don’t you want to watch?”

As soon as Dorothy heard there’d be horse races, she perked up, clearly excited. But then she looked at Natasha and hesitated. “Well, I…”

Before Dorothy could decide, Jared had already gestured to his assistant to take her over to watch the races.

Dorothy didn’t dare go against Jared’s orders, so she shot Natasha a look that basically said, ‘Good luck, you’re on your

own.’

Natasha had thought about going to the races with Dorothy, but she still hadn’t recovered from the riding. Her legs were still shaking. All she could do was watch Dorothy walk away.

“Come with me,” Jared said, striding off. But after a few steps, he realized Natasha wasn’t following. He turned around and saw her still standing there, looking totally lost.

Natasha gave an awkward smile. “Mr. Rundell, maybe you should just go ahead without me. I-”

Before she could finish, Jared was already coming back toward her. He bent down and swept her up in his arms bridal-style. Natasha looked at him in shock, completely dumbfounded.

Chapter 42 Fell Asleep in His Car

Jared marched out of the racetrack, holding her in his arms. Natasha pressed against his chest, instinctively trying to keep some space between them.

But whenever she looked up, her face would brush against his jaw. They were so close it felt way too intimate. Her hands quietly curled into fists.

Jared carried Natasha to the car and placed her in the seat. She immediately scooted to the window on the other side, putting distance between them.

Soon, the driver started the car. The trauma from that horseback ride was still haunting Natasha. She clung to the armrests, afraid the car would start bouncing like the horse had.

But the ride had drained her energy. Natasha had been sitting upright at first, but soon she was nodding off.

Her head grew heavier and heavier by the second. Eventually her eyelids grew heavy, and she drifted off to sleep just like that.

Jared noticed that Natasha had stayed motionless for a long while. He turned his head and saw that she had fallen asleep.

Her head was resting against the car window, her face turned toward him. Her eyes were gently closed, her breathing soft and steady.

She looked utterly peaceful in her sleep. Jared’s gaze lingered on her for a few moments, his deep eyes taking her in.

‘She drifts off to sleep just like this in my car?’ Jared wondered. ‘Doesn’t she worry that I might take advantage of her while she’s asleep?’
