Chapter 205 One Crystal Was Not Enough

A man like that was powerful enough to make everyone else feel outclassed.

With a heavy thud, Morton moved with the agility of a panther. As he came down, he locked his legs around the level 4 mutated zombie’s head and slammed it hard into the ground.

Man and zombie rolled across the dirt together.

“Let’s go, Captain Carter!”

Cade was still off to the side, panting, wiping sweat from his face while waving his gun and shouting encouragement. The others joined in too.

Then a dull gunshot rang out from behind them.

When Cecilia turned, she saw Sean standing a mile away with his gun raised. That shot had struck the level 4 mutated zombie squarely in the knee just as Morton brought it down.

The bullet sank into the zombie’s body. It didn’t cause much pain, but when the zombie tried to stand, the injured leg buckled immediately.

The level 4 mutated zombie froze for a second and tried to force the leg back into place, only for Morton to seize control of its head again.

“Captain Carter, over here!”

Cade ran to the side of a wrecked vehicle and waved Morton over. Morton’s eyes sharpened. “Move.”

He kicked again. The level 4 zombie was sent flying and crashed hard into the ruined car.

At the same time, Cade hoisted a launcher onto his shoulder and aimed directly at it. The shell fired.

Oliver instantly stepped in front of Cecilia, Ivy, and Amber with his massive frame. Timothy and the others all changed expressions and jumped aside.

But in the very instant the blast went off, Morton used his spatial ability to shift both the car and the level 4 mutated zombie away.

So when the explosion finally thundered through the air and everyone looked up again, the fiery blast was happening a third of a mile away.

Morton was still standing where he had been fighting the zombie, a cigarette between his lips as he calmly watched the burning wreck in the distance. Only then did he turn and stroll back.

Cade grinned and gave him a thumbs–up. “Captain Carter really is something else.”

Morton ignored him.

“Captain Carter!” Sean called out to him and motioned behind him.

Morton turned and saw a figure staggering out of the blazing, shattered vehicle. It was still alive.

Timothy and the others were stunned. Even that shell had not managed to kill the level 4 mutated zombie. Morton’s face darkened slightly. He said to Cade, “Go finish it.”

“On it.”

Cade waved a hand, and the men behind him swapped magazines before charging toward the level 4 mutated zombie with all kinds of machine guns blazing.

The gunfire came in a relentless stream. That much noise drew quite a few ordinary zombies from nearby. luring them over.

Remembering something, Timothy immediately said to Morton, “Mr. Carter, don’t forget to have them bring back the level 4 mutated zombie’s head. There’s a zombie crystal inside.”

“Right.”

Morton seemed to remember only then and sent someone to relay the message to Cade.

His team had numbers on their side, and they moved fast. The dense gunfire made everyone’s nerves tighten.

Cecilia pushed Oliver aside after he had shielded them and looked into the distance. The level 4 mutated zombie had been riddled with bullets. It had no strength left to fight back.

Before long, Cade came back wearing a grin, carrying the level 4 mutated zombie’s head in one hand.

Its face was already a mangled mess of flesh and blood, its features completely unrecognizable. That explosion had done real damage.

Cade tossed the zombie head onto the ground, clapped his hands, and said to Timothy, “Go on then. Dig out that zombie crystal you mentioned.”

Timothy had only just recovered from the shock of the fight. He quickly dug the crystal out of the skull and handed it over to Cade.

“So there really is one.”

Cade looked delighted and immediately passed it to Morton. “Damn. Isn’t this basically a zombie’s inner core?”

“An inner core that grows in its brain?”

Morton took the crystal, or rather the so–called inner core, and examined it closely before looking at Timothy. “How do you use this?”

After a moment’s thought, Timothy pulled out a level 1 mutated zombie crystal from his pocket and handed it over. “Level 4 mutated zombie crystals are rare. Normally they’re used to break through ability levels. If you just want to replenish your energy, Mr. Carter, use this one.”

Morton glanced at the red crystal, took it, and listened as Timothy carefully explained the method.

Its color faded from red to cloudy white. It was useless now.

Surprise surfaced in Morton’s eyes. He looked again at the level 4 mutated zombie crystal in his hand. “Can this thing level people up?”
