The faintest hint of a smirk tugged at his lips. “It’s pretty good.”

Cecelia snapped her fingers and turned to Ivy and Amber. “See? Four votes in favor. Motion passed.”
“Wait, Cecelia! Oliver didn’t vote! He didn’t agree!”
“Why would he disagree?”
Cecelia’s smile was serene. “He’s my brother.”
Amber was stumped.
She got it instantly.
Right. The big guy’s entire brain was devoted to protecting his “sister.” A textbook sibling complex. He’d agree to anything Cecelia said.
Four to two.
Ivy could only laugh. “All Survive does have a certain ring to it, actually. It’s growing on me.”
Amber had nothing left to say.
She was outnumbered. Another defection. No–two defections.
Honestly, though? She was starting to like it, too.
“So from today on, we’re all members of the All Survive Squad! Should we get, like, matching jackets?* Amber was already getting into it.
Cecelia shook her head. “Jackets can wait. Right now, the priority is leveling. Next objective: two more Level 4 mutated zombie crystals. Get Draven and Amber to Level 4.”
A full Level 4 squad out hunting was worth infinitely more than matching outfits.
In the other SUV.
Hendrick watched through his open window as Cecelia’s crew laughed and chatted, and something tightened behind his eyes. “They’ve only known each other a few days, and they’re already more. comfortable than they ever were with us.”
Timothy heard the sourness and sighed. “No need to think that way. We had real friction with Cecelia before. These people don’t have that baggage. Of course, they trust her more.”
“Don’t we trust what she says now, too?”
Hendrick pulled his gaze back and exhaled smoke. “Our two teams are going to be working together for a while.”
“Hm?”

Timothy looked at him. “Once everyone’s at Level 4, we head for Briar City. Where Cecelia goes after that is her business.”
“She’ll go, too.”
“Hm?”
Hendrick’s voice was flat and certain. “Briar City is every ability user’s final destination.”
Two hours later.
Cecelia’s convoy pulled into a small, abandoned town about 50 miles from Sanctum City.
In the apocalypse-
Deserted towns were a dime a dozen.
The town they picked for a temporary stop wasn’t very large, either.
There were about a dozen scattered single–story houses.
They were set back from the main road, with decent cover.
They’d only found it because Draven had urgently needed a bathroom break.
As usual.
Someone had to get out first to clear all the zombies in the town and check the situation.
That job fell to Draven–his wind ability made him the fastest–with Amber and Oliver backing him up.
Cecelia picked a three–story house with a clearing out front.
The door was hanging open.
Whatever zombies had been here were long gone.
Inside was a complete mess, and the stench in the air was awful, but after making a round through the place, she didn’t find anyone alive.
She turned to Blake. “Can you sense anything unusual nearby with your psychic ability?”
The town backed up against wooded hills. Low–level mutated beasts were likely nearby.
