Chapter 10
Hugo returned just before the storm intensified.
As he crossed the courtyard and saw Julian and Tyla kneeling in the rain, he gave a short, humorless laugh.
Hale Pack was already financially unstable. Julian could not afford to antagonize Hugo.
He endured the humiliation in silence.
I met Hugo at the door and took his soaked jacket.
Without thinking, our fingers intertwined naturally.
Julian saw it.
His eyes reddened.
“Wynne,” he called out, voice raw. “Are you really abandoning us? I moved my mother to a private care facility. I expelled Serena from Wolf City. No one will ever mistreat you again. I swear I’ll protect you for the
rest of my life.”
Protect.
The word almost made me smile.
Before I could respond, Hugo wrapped an arm around my waist and lifted me easily.
He kissed me, unhurried, deliberate, claiming.
When he looked at Julian again, his expression was cold.
“I was willing to let you crawl away,” Hugo said quietly. “But you had to remind me what my mate endured under your roof. That was a mistake.”
He carried me inside and set me down gently on the sofa.
Then he stepped back out into the rain.
The first punch sent Julian into the mud.
Tyla screamed.
“Stop! Don’t hurt my dad!”
Hugo did not hesitate.
Each blow landed with controlled precision. Not wild. Not reckless. Deliberate.
Julian did not fight back.
He lay in the mud, blood mixing with rainwater, barely conscious.

Even so, he dragged himself toward the doorway.
Toward me.
Hugo noticed.
He stepped on Julian’s already damaged hand.
The old injury split open. Blood pooled in the rain.
Tyla turned on me, fury overtaking fear.
She rushed forward and slammed into my abdomen.
The impact knocked the air from my lungs and I fell to the floor.
“How can you let someone hit my dad?” she cried. “I’ll never accept you as my mother. Never!”
There was a time when that would have destroyed me.
Now it felt distant.
Muted.
“I don’t need you to,” I said evenly. “I stopped claiming you as my daughter a long time ago.”
The words hit her harder than Hugo’s punches hit Julian.
Her bravado cracked instantly.
She grabbed my hand, panic rising.
“Mom, I didn’t mean it. I just didn’t want Dad to get hurt.”
Hugo was beside me in an instant, lifting me carefully.
His restraint snapped.
He called his warriors and ordered them to remove Julian and Tyla from the property immediately.
Julian begged.
His voice broke as he pleaded with me not to be cruel.
I did not look at him.
I rested my forehead against Hugo’s chest and let his scent block out the sound of regret.
After the mating ceremony celebrations concluded, Hugo took me away on his private jet.
We returned to the place where we first met.
