Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Spent a week on that island.
First time I didn’t have to worry about Luke. No work calls. No Lucas.
I felt light.
Realized something-all that “control” I thought I had over my life? Bullshit. I never controlled anything.
Letting go? That’s when I finally felt free.
Even my graying hair started turning dark again.
Everything was perfect-except Benson wouldn’t leave me alone. Flirted nonstop.
So I fled back to the States.
Hung out with my girls for two days. Then Jasmine texted asking to meet.
Café. She got there early.
“Sorry again about… you know. The mix-up last time.”
I sipped my coffee, stared out the window. Winter didn’t feel as cold this year.
She kept rambling-small talk, fake politeness. I cut her off.
“You said this was about Luke. Get to it.”
Jasmine tucked her hair behind her ear. “Luke’s… struggling. Lucas is drowning in company mess. I’m pregnant-can’t handle him.”
“You know how it is. A kid needs his real mom.”
She watched my face. Kept going.
“You and Lucas are divorced now. Makes more sense for you to take him.”
I laughed. Cold.
“Funny. You forget what you said at preschool pickup?”
I mimicked her syrupy voice.
“How about I become your mommy? Give you a baby brother?””
“What happened? Run out of money already?”
Jasmine’s eyes darted around. She didn’t expect this.
“We have plenty of money.”
“But stepmoms have it rough. You don’t want him suffering, do you?”

I slammed my cup down.
“If he suffers, that’s his choice. He’s young, but he’s not stupid.”
“You don’t want Luke? Talk to his father. Don’t demand I clean up your mess.”
Jasmine’s head snapped up. Eyes wide with disbelief.
I walked out.
Spent the next month waiting for the divorce to finalize. Started my new company.
Bunch of old employees quit and came to work for me.
Lucas didn’t believe Jasmine when she told him I wasn’t taking Luke. He tracked down my office address.
Showed up with Luke in tow. Voice all soft-like when we first met.
“Go on. Hold Mommy’s hand. Let’s go home.”
I looked up. Luke’s cheeks were chapped raw.
No one watching the nanny. Of course she didn’t care.
Old me would’ve been heartbroken.
Now? He looked like a stranger.
Luke glanced up at his dad. Little voice wavering.
“Daddy, didn’t you say Aunt Jasmine is my mommy now?”
I could practically feel Lucas’s humiliation radiating off him.
His face twisted. He smacked Luke’s head. “Don’t talk nonsense. She’s your mom.”
Luke flinched. Tears spilled over. He forced the words out, sulking.
