Chapter 122 Vanessa’s Cry

After a long silence, Nolan’s voice was quiet. “Scarlett, do you want me to do this surgery?”

Scarlett shook her head slowly. “I don’t know.”

A doctor’s duty was to save lives-but after what Daniel had done to Nolan, how could anyone simply move on?

Nolan smiled with that familiar gentleness of his. “You should know-if you ask me to do it, I won’t be able to refuse you.”

Scarlett’s gaze drifted to Nolan’s injured hand. “Even if you wanted to operate, you might not be physically able to right now. Let’s just focus on you getting better first.”

Nolan gave a soft hum of acknowledgment and didn’t press further.

Scarlett didn’t ask how he’d been injured. She could already guess it was tied to the rumors Daniel had spread.

Jealousy could be vicious, and gossip could ruin a person-she understood that all too well.

She stayed with Nolan a while longer before finally rising to leave.

Before she walked out, she turned and told him, “Nolan, whether you take this case or not-it’s your decision alone. No one should force you into it.”

Herself included.

Nolan smiled at her, his voice tender. “I know.”

When Scarlett returned to Theron Manor from the hospital, Henry, Diana, and Clara had already gone to bed.

Nathan, as was his habit, waited until she was safely home before retiring himself.

Scarlett spoke briefly with Violet. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary with her family- Vincent was clearly holding back for now, waiting on Nolan’s decision about the surgery.

The next day, the Therons returned to its usual rhythm.

The adults went to work, the children to school…

Scarlett guessed Vincent probably wouldn’t make a move against her family just yet.

Around 10 a.m., her phone rang. Vincent’s name flashed on the screen.

Chapter 122 Vanessa’s Cry

Since their marriage, he had rarely ever called her.

If this had happened before, Scarlett would have been over the moon.

But now… things were different. She felt nothing.

She answered coolly, “What is it?”

Vincent got straight to the point. “Let’s have lunch.”

Scarlett was about to refuse when he added, “Nolan will be there too.”

No doubt this was about Daniel’s mother and her urgent need for surgery.

When they didn’t need Nolan, they were fine with crushing him-tarnishing his reputation, sabotaging the career he’d worked so hard to build.

Now that they needed him, they couldn’t even ask properly. Instead, they wanted Scarlett to act as the go-between.

It was almost laughable, really.

Was their pride as wealthy people really that fragile?

Was admitting they were wrong so difficult?

The thought drew a dry, humorless laugh from her. “Vincent, I’m not your puppet. You can’t just pull my strings whenever it suits you. I don’t need you to buy me lunch-I can feed myself.”

With that, she hung up, not caring how he might react.

But just before the call cut off, she thought she heard Sabrina’s voice in the background.

That afternoon, her phone rang again.

This time, it was a call from Ravenshade Villa.

Scarlett guessed it was probably Vanessa. She hesitated, unsure whether to answer.

Vanessa had hurt her more than once.

But then again, she was still her daughter. Holding a grudge against a child felt wrong.

She picked up but didn’t speak, waiting for Vanessa to break the silence.

Vanessa waited too-both of them holding their breath.

Finally, Vanessa gave in first. “Mom?”

Her voice was small, barely a whisper, tinged with something like pleading.

Scarlett replied evenly, “Yes.”

Vanessa asked cautiously, “Mom… can you come home? Dad and Sabrina haven’t been back for days.”

Scarlett figured Vincent and Sabrina were likely tied up with Daniel’s mother’s medical crisis— that would explain their absence.

Still, she wasn’t ready to give in. “Isn’t Lily at Ravenshade Villa?”

Vanessa sounded down, her voice muffled. “But Lily is just the housekeeper. I have a mom and a dad. I just… want my parents with me.”

Just her parents?

What about Sabrina?

Scarlett understood what Vanessa really meant. She was only asking for her mom because Sabrina wasn’t available-she was settling for second best.

“Mom has to work late tonight, so I can’t come home-”

Before Scarlett could finish her refusal, Vanessa began to cry. “Mom, I haven’t eaten. Lily’s food doesn’t taste good. I want your dish.”

Hearing that, Scarlett’s chest tightened. Against her better judgment, she felt herself softening. Her voice gentle, she coaxed, “Don’t cry, sweetheart. I’ll come home after work.”

Vanessa’s tears stopped almost instantly. “Thank you, Mom! You’re the best parent.”
