For a long moment, Scarlett felt herself pulled back in time-twelve months ago, when things were different.

Back then, she must have truly mattered to Vanessa.

But after she returned to hospital work and was sent to Oakridge for training, Vanessa had slowly begun transferring her affection to Sabrina.

Once that shift happened, there was no going back.

Scarlett’s mind went blank for a while. It was only when Vanessa’s voice came through the phone again-“Mom?”-that she snapped back to the present and replied, “Yes?”

Vanessa said, “Then I’ll be really good while I wait for you to come home, Mom.”

Scarlett answered, “Okay.”

After hanging up, Scarlett sat motionless for some time, lost in her thoughts.

She felt deeply helpless, and a bitter amusement crept into her heart.

Vanessa hadn’t mentioned anything about what happened in Sea City-it was as if she had wiped the memory

clean.

But that night, she had been the one to push Scarlett into apologizing to Daniel.

After work, Scarlett stopped by the grocery store. She picked up ingredients for cooking and some of Vanessa’s favorite fruits.

When she arrived at Ravenshade Villa, Vanessa was in the living room playing with her toys, with Lily keeping an eye on her.

Hearing the sound at the door, Vanessa turned. Scarlett stepped inside, her hands full of grocery bags.

Vanessa quickly stood up, rushed over, and wrapped her arms around Scarlett’s leg. “Mom, you’re home!”

Scarlett looked down at Vanessa’s eager embrace. Her heart softened a little, but her hands were too full to hug back. She just said gently, “Alright, let me go so I can start dinner.”

Even though Vanessa had hurt her many times, that biological bond between mother and child was something she couldn’t simply break.

Once Vanessa let go, she eagerly reached for Scarlett’s bags. “Mom, let me help you carry them.”

The bags were heavy, and Scarlett didn’t want the child straining herself. “Go on and play, sweetheart. I can manage.”

But Vanessa insisted, tugging lightly at the fruit bag. “Mom, my teacher says we should help out at home. I want you to be less tired.”

Scarlett felt a slight frown form.

If Vanessa had said something like this before, she would have been overjoyed-probably stroking her cheek and praising her for growing up so thoughtful.

But now, it all felt unreal, almost like a scene from a dream.

After a brief hesitation, Vanessa ended up holding one lighter bag, while Lily took the rest.

While Scarlett was in the kitchen preparing the dough, Vanessa lingered nearby.

When Scarlett started mixing the filling, Vanessa helped by peeling onions beside her.

Scarlett guessed the teacher must have taught the children to be kind and helpful to their parents, and Vanessa had taken it to heart. That thought brought her a little comfort.

Maybe as Vanessa grew older, she would come to see that Sabrina wasn’t as wonderful as she believed.

The possibility lifted Scarlett’s spirits as she continued preparing the food.

Vanessa noticed Scarlett’s lips curve upward and sensed her mood had lightened.

After hesitating for a long while, she finally spoke up, “Mom, can I ask you for a favor?”

Scarlett’s hands, busy with chopping vegetables, stilled. She turned to Vanessa, the smile completely gone from her face.

“What is it?” she asked.

Vanessa registered Scarlett’s shift in mood but pressed on. “Mr. Lennox’s mom is really sick. I heard Dad say only Mr. Huntley can do the surgery. Mr. Lennox has been at the hospital for days without sleeping. You and Mr. Huntley are good friends. If you ask him, he won’t say no.”

Scarlett froze. She lifted her gaze toward the ceiling. Suddenly, she let out a laugh, even as tears traced paths down her cheeks.

In that moment, she understood everything.

So Vanessa’s insistence on her coming home, all that helping around the house-it was all leading up to this, a plea on Daniel’s behalf.

She’d even called him “Mr. Huntley” just to win Scarlett over.

During Scarlett’s prolonged silence, Vanessa reached out and touched Scarlett’s fingers. “Mom?”

After what felt like an eternity, Scarlett finally looked at Vanessa and said, “Vanessa, you once said you had your own opinion-that people Mr. Lennox dislikes can’t be good people. You don’t need to force yourself to call him ‘Mr. Huntley.”

It took Vanessa a moment to recall what Scarlett was referring to.

So the person Daniel disliked happened to be the very doctor who could save his mother.

For a moment, Vanessa didn’t know what to say.

Still, she continued to plead, “Mom, will you do it for me?”

Scarlett shook her head. “I can’t help.”

Vanessa drew out the word, “Mom?”-clearly trying to sound cute and persuasive.

But Scarlett’s voice remained firm. “I said I can’t help.”

Vanessa finally lowered her eyes. “Okay, then.”

She left the kitchen, her whole posture dejected, and went to sit alone in the living room.
