Scarlett didn’t address his question about Vanessa. She cut directly to the matter at hand. “The bank card you gave me has been frozen.”

Vincent paused momentarily, then recalled the instructions he’d given Abbott previously. Yes, he had indeed ordered the card to be frozen.

He didn’t bother offering an explanation. After a brief silence, he asked Scarlett, “What were you trying to purchase?”

Scarlett opened her mouth, wanting to demand why the card was frozen, but seeing Vincent’s dismissive attitude made it clear he was fully aware of the situation. The words died in her throat.

Then Vincent stated abruptly, “I’ll transfer some money to you instead.”

Scarlett felt anger rising, but she was too emotionally drained to argue. She told him flatly, “Never mind.”

With that, she ended the call without hesitation.

Melinda, standing nearby, had overheard the entire conversation. Even without full context, she could easily piece together what had happened.

She immediately erupted at Scarlett, “That absolute jerk! How can he treat you like this and you’re still not filing for divorce?”

Scarlett’s voice was hoarse with suppressed emotion. “It will happen soon.”

The more Melinda thought about it, the angrier she became. “That despicable man! He spends millions on fireworks displays for his mistress’ birthday, not to mention all the luxury gifts and extravagant surprises. He casually blows through tens of millions, but when you want to buy your own daughter a dress costing a few thousand, you have to beg him for money? I swear, how does he not get run over every time he crosses the street?”

Scarlett felt disappointed and hurt, but by now she had grown accustomed to such treatment. It barely registered anymore.

“Melinda, I simply won’t make the purchase. There’s no need to waste energy getting angry over someone like him.”

Melinda was practically shaking with rage. “I genuinely want to strangle that scumbag with my bare hands.”

Scarlett squeezed her friend’s hand reassuringly. “Let it go. He’s not worth your outrage.”

He was grinning at Scarlett, his expression both arrogant and wild.

Scarlett frowned at him. “That won’t be necessary. I don’t want any of it.”

Damian strode over, retrieved a sleek black credit card from his coat, and handed it to the clerk. He raised an eyebrow defiantly and declared, “When a woman says she doesn’t want something, she usually means the opposite. Pack everything. Charge it to my card.”

Remembering Nathan’s warning, Scarlett didn’t dare get too close to Damian. Seeing him prepared to pay, she panicked and urgently whispered to the clerk, “I said I don’t want these. Even if he pays, I won’t accept them.”

With that, Scarlett grabbed Melinda’s hand and strode decisively out of the children’s section.

She reasoned that if Damian witnessed her firm refusal, he would abandon his intention to purchase the items.

Scarlett didn’t know how to respond, so she stated simply, “It could be anyone. But it definitely won’t be him.”

The Langley family ranked among the most powerful in Rivergate, and Damian essentially lived under a spotlight. Even if he didn’t marry some wealthy socialite, he would inevitably end up with someone from an equally prominent family.

Melinda remained undeterred. She continued encouraging Scarlett. “Just give it a chance! He’s incredibly handsome, and you’re just going to let him pass by without even trying?”
