Thomas was a highly respected figure in academic circles, someone many looked up to. Even prominent figures like Vincent and Daniel knew to show him proper respect-especially since they needed a favor from him that evening.
Thomas glanced briefly at Vincent and Daniel before his gaze settled on Sabrina. Feeling the weight of his attention, she grew visibly nervous. “Dr. Newman,” she greeted hesitantly.
His eyes swept over her briefly. “Take a seat. No need to stand there staring.”
“Please have a seat as well, Dr. Newman,” Sabrina replied respectfully.
Thomas didn’t respond and seated himself directly.
Vincent signaled the server to begin preparing the dishes.
Meanwhile, Thomas looked at Vincent. “Let’s be clear-I don’t have much time. Twenty
minutes, tops. If there’s something you want to discuss, get straight to the point. I have another commitment after this, and I can’t keep people waiting.”
Though Thomas maintained a polite smile, his words made it clear he wasn’t going out of his way to accommodate them.
Vincent remained composed, but Daniel’s smile had already faded. Sabrina sat quietly beside Vincent, not even daring to look directly at Thomas.
Sensing her discomfort, Vincent cut to the chase. “Dr. Newman, I’ll be direct. We’re here because Sabrina has some academic questions she’d like your guidance on.”
Thomas shifted his gaze to Sabrina. “What’s on your mind? Go ahead.”
Even with Vincent present, his tone wasn’t particularly warm.
Sabrina looked up, meeting his eyes timidly. “Dr. Newman, I’ve reviewed a lot of literature, but I’m still struggling to identify a research topic that’s both meaningful and feasible. I’d really appreciate your advice.”
After being accepted into the Ph.D. program, Sabrina’s main task was research, but she still lacked clear direction.
While others in her cohort were already deep into their projects, she remained the only one who hadn’t chosen a topic-a serious setback in academic terms.
That was why she had sought this meeting with Thomas.

Known for being strict and often unsmiling, Thomas intimidated most students. Sabrina was no exception. To secure this consultation, she felt she had no choice but to bring Vincent and Daniel along.
Hearing her question, Thomas remained stern. “The biggest mistake anyone in medicine can make is lack of commitment. You’re always performing here or there, taking weeks off at a time, never in the library after class, and completely unreachable in the evenings. If everyone acted like you, coming to me with every little issue, what would be the point of having standards? What would a Ph.D. even mean then?”
“I’m sorry, Dr. Newman,” Sabrina murmured, hanging her head in humiliation.
Thomas adjusted his glasses, his tone cutting. “You’re not apologizing to me. You’re letting yourself down. Wasting time on a master’s, now wasting time on a doctorate. If you’re not serious about practicing medicine, you should drop the idea early. The opportunities this country provides aren’t for you to polish your resume. Squandering medical resources is a disgrace.”
Every word dripped with disdain.
Over the years, Thomas had mentored many outstanding students. Which of them had been as frequently absent as Sabrina? While others spent evenings buried in the lab, repeating experiments for reliable data, she seemed to treat her studies as optional.
Sabrina’s head sank lower, her face flushed, her fingers clenching tightly on her knees. Thomas’ words felt more humiliating than a physical slap.
She had thought bringing Vincent and Daniel would ensure Thomas treated her more politely. She never expected him to reprimand her so bluntly in front of them.
What Thomas said wasn’t wrong-but his delivery was brutally harsh. Especially in front of Vincent.
Beside her, Vincent listened quietly to Thomas criticizing Sabrina, his expression cold and clearly displeased, yet he didn’t speak up.
Daniel, being more hot-tempered, couldn’t stand hearing Thomas talk to Sabrina that way. He slammed his hand on the table. “You pretentious old man, watch your tone! Even if Sabrina never practices medicine, she’ll be just fine. Who are you to talk down to her like that?”
Seeing Daniel’s outburst, Sabrina hurriedly tried to calm him. “Daniel, please, it’s my fault-”
Before she could finish, Daniel cut in, “Sabrina, I just can’t stand this guy bullying you.”
Thomas glanced calmly at Daniel. “If she’ll be ‘just fine,’ then maybe she should leave medicine sooner rather than later. Getting into a Ph.D. program isn’t the accomplishment-finishing it
is.”
