She had already wasted too much time waiting for Vanessa that morning. Though she had arrived early, it seemed her daughter didn’t need her after all. The thought brought a dull ache to her chest.

As she pulled into the hospital parking lot and was just getting out of her car, she heard someone call her name.

“Scarlett.”

Turning toward the voice, she saw Nolan dressed in casual clothes. With his bright eyes, striking features, and tall stature, he was exceptionally handsome-the kind of looks rarely seen in the medical field.

“Hey,” Scarlett greeted him.

They walked together toward the elevator. While waiting, Nolan asked, “Are you free for dinner tonight?”

Thinking about how Vanessa seemed to be distancing herself, Scarlett agreed. “Yes, I’m free.”

Nolan smiled. “Good. I’ll pick you up after work.”

Scarlett started to say it wasn’t necessary, but Nolan added, “There will be someone else joining us.”

“Who?” she asked curiously.

Nolan kept the mystery. “You’ll find out tonight.”

Though she had been in low spirits, his playful secrecy brought a slight smile to her face. “Since when did you become so mysterious?”

Nolan simply smiled without answering.

The elevator arrived, and they stepped in together. On the first floor, a crowd pressed into the car. Nolan moved in front of Scarlett, shielding her in the space near his chest.

During the morning rush, people were packed tightly together. Scarlett found herself practically pressed against Nolan’s chest as the elevator ascended. She could clearly hear his heartbeat-fast and strong, as if trying to burst out of his ribcage.

She secretly glanced upward and noticed his tense jawline and a visible blush creeping up neck.

But after Thomas entered, he didn’t glance toward Nolan or Scarlett. Instead, following the server, he headed directly toward a private room.

As he passed near them, Nolan had already started to call out “Dr.-” but before he could finish, Thomas walked past without acknowledgment, puzzling both Scarlett and Nolan.

Their eyes followed Thomas as the private room door opened, revealing the people inside- Vincent, Daniel, and Sabrina.

Sabrina was the one who opened the door. Seeing Thomas, she immediately lowered her head respectfully and greeted, “Dr. Newman.”

Thomas merely gave an “Mm” of acknowledgment before entering the room.

After the door closed, Nolan led Scarlett back to their seats. He looked at her, his eyes full of apology. “I’m sorry, I didn’t expect they would also be inviting Dr. Newman tonight.”
