Chapter 168 A Child’s Wish

As Scarlett stepped out of the hospital, the cool evening breeze brushed against her face, yet it did nothing to soothe the renewed ache in her heart.

Vincent’s unresisting attitude just now-though she had long known he wanted the divorce— still felt like a fresh wound when faced with his readiness to let go.

Five years of marriage had ultimately amounted to nothing.

In his heart, she probably mattered less than a stray cat or dog.

Near the hospital entrance, a street vendor was selling fruit. Under the warm glow of the streetlights, the oranges looked especially inviting.

Looking at them, Scarlett couldn’t help but remember how much Vanessa loved oranges.

Her heart softened. In the end, she bought two pounds.

Carrying them back into the hospital, she noticed Vincent was no longer sitting in the corridor outside the ward.

She reached the door and was about to knock when she heard Vanessa’s small, weak voice from inside. “Daddy, didn’t you say if I was good, you’d grant me one wish?”

Vincent was sitting on the edge of the hospital bed, his daughter leaning against him.

Remembering his promise, he smiled softly. “Yes, you can tell me your wish now.”

Vanessa lifted her head and looked up at him, her round eyes blinking earnestly. “Daddy, I want to call Sabrina ‘Mommy””

Outside the door, Scarlett’s grip loosened. The bag of oranges slipped from her hand and hit the floor, scattering in every direction.

In that moment, her heart felt as though it had been pierced by a sharp blade.

She pressed a hand to her chest, tears streaming silently down her face.

Even though she already knew Vanessa preferred Sabrina, this was still the child she had carried for ten months, nearly died delivering, and carefully raised for four years.

Clutching her chest, Scarlett could no longer focus on what Vincent and Vanessa were saying inside.

Stumbling away from the ward, distraught and disoriented, she wandered without direction.

Inside the room, Vincent’s brow had furrowed slightly at Vanessa’s request. He stroked her hair gently and looked down at her. “Why would you wish for that?”

Vanessa’s small face was still pale, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “That day when Mom came to pick up Clara, she ignored me completely. It was raining, and Lily was the one who came for me in the end. I even asked Mom to take me to Grandma’s house too, but she didn’t even look at me. She just took Clara and left. Daddy… Mom doesn’t want me anymore.”

Vincent’s heart ached at her words. He brushed a tear from her cheek, his own voice growing husky. “This is Daddy’s fault for not making better arrangements. I’m sorry this has been bothering you for so long.”

Vanessa shook her head. “I don’t blame Daddy. Daddy works very hard. But Mom was already there that day. She could have taken me too… she just didn’t want to.”

Vincent held her slightly away, his hands gently framing her small face as he spoke with gentle seriousness. “Vanessa, no matter what happened, she is still your mother. Those are separate things-you mustn’t confuse them.”

Fresh tears rolled down Vanessa’s cheeks. “Daddy, if Mom doesn’t love me anymore… can’t I have a new mom?”

His expression softened, but his voice remained firm. “No.”

Recognizing the finality in his tone, Vanessa fell silent.

Seeing her distress, Vincent softened his approach. “Your mother carried you inside her and brought you into this world. That will never change. Even if you grow to love Sabrina very much, and even if someday you might call her ‘Mom’ too-that’s for the future. For now, she can only call her Sabrina, and you must remember that.”

Though too young to grasp the full weight of his words, Vanessa had always trusted her father. Despite her lingering sadness, she nodded slowly. “Okay, Daddy, I understand.”

Vincent leaned forward and gently rested his forehead against hers before offering a warm smile. “You’re the most wonderful, well-behaved little girl in the world. I will always love you.”

That finally brought a fragile smile to her face. “What about Sabrina? Will she always love me too?”

Vincent nodded. “Yes, she will.”

Comforted, Vanessa’s smile grew brighter.

Just then, Vincent’s phone chimed from the nightstand.

After making sure Vanessa was settled comfortably, he picked it up.

It was a message from Scarlett. “Please sign the agreement as soon as possible.”

He didn’t reply, deciding instead to have the signed document delivered to her when it was ready.

Setting his phone aside, he noticed Vanessa was already engrossed in cartoons on her tablet, her earlier sorrow forgotten as quiet giggles filled the room. Children’s emotions were indeed as changeable as spring weather.

Watching his daughter, Vincent felt a complicated mix of emotions swirling within him.

He remembered how tenderly Scarlett had once doted on Vanessa-how she’d been the center of her world. It was difficult to reconcile those memories with the image of her leaving their daughter waiting in the rain.

Yet he knew Vanessa wouldn’t lie about something like this.

Lately, he had to admit-Scarlett truly seemed different.
