Xavier had provided Scarlett with an invitation, so she entered the venue without any issues.

Inside the banquet hall, all the guests were dressed in formal attire. Only Scarlett was in casual clothes.

Some people glanced over with curiosity, but she ignored the stares and began scanning the room for Lucy.

The hall was bustling with lively chatter and the clinking of glasses. The crowd was diverse, filled with handsome men and elegantly dressed women.

For a moment, Scarlett felt slightly overwhelmed.

But soon, she spotted Lucy sitting alone in a corner.

Unlike the others, Lucy wasn’t socializing. Instead, she was quietly hiding away, focused on her plate of food.

As Scarlett moved toward her, a man of average height and unremarkable appearance also approached Lucy.

But before Scarlett could reach her, the man got there first.

Noticing his shifty eyes and furtive movements, Scarlett sensed something was wrong. She hurried over and sharply slapped the man’s hand away just as it was about to touch Lucy.

“What are you doing?” Scarlett demanded, her voice sharp.

Hearing the commotion, Lucy stood up. Recognizing Scarlett, she quickly moved to stand beside her. “Scarlett?”

Keeping a wary eye on the scowling man, Scarlett said to Lucy, “Grandpa was worried about you. He asked me to check on you.”

Lucy realized the man had been targeting her and felt a surge of fear, instinctively clutching Scarlett’s sleeve. “Scarlett, I’m okay.”

Hearing this, Scarlett growled at the man, “Get lost!”

The man’s cheeks were flushed. He didn’t speak, but the look he gave Scarlett was sinister, almost predatory.

Uncomfortable under his stare, Scarlett took Lucy’s wrist. “Let’s go outside to talk.”

To avoid further trouble, it was better not to stay in the main hall.

The two made their way to the venue’s backyard, which was surprisingly spacious. It featured not only a swimming pool and a badminton court but also leisure swings and a gazebo for resting.

They sat down in the gazebo. At first, Scarlett remained silent, unsure how to begin.

After a brief pause, Lucy spoke first, “Scarlett, Grandpa sent you to persuade me, didn’t he?”

Scarlett met Lucy’s sincere gaze and nodded. “Yes.”

Lucy smiled faintly. “Scarlett, I love medicine. I don’t want to get married.”

Scarlett still tried to advise her. “But Lucy, you’re different from us. You’re a Stewart.”

Lucy wasn’t offended. Instead, she looked seriously at Scarlett. “Scarlett, when you gave birth to Vanessa, you came back from death’s door. I want to study medicine because I don’t want women to face such dangers anymore.”

Her words reminded Scarlett of her former self.

There was a time when she had felt the same passion and determination.

Back then, she had been resolved to become a highly skilled general surgeon.

But now, she was only a junior pediatric surgeon, not even qualified to perform major operations yet.

Touched, Scarlett didn’t press further.

Just then, two girls waved at Lucy from a short distance away. “Lucy, come dance with us!”

Lucy called back, “Coming!”

Then, she looked down at Scarlett. “Scarlett, I’m going to hang out with my friends for a bit.”

Scarlett nodded. “Okay, be careful.”

Lucy stood up and walked a few steps before stopping. She turned back to Scarlett and smiled. “Scarlett, I won’t change my mind about studying medicine. I think if I had been there when you had Vanessa, I wouldn’t have let you be so afraid.”

She wanted to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology, to ensure women wouldn’t have to fear childbirth.

Hearing Lucy’s words, Scarlett was deeply moved.

Memories of giving birth to Vanessa came flooding back, bringing a wave of panic. Tears welled in her eyes and began to fall.

The more she thought about it, the more her heart ached.

The child she had risked her life to bring into the world now wanted to call someone else “Mom”.

Overcome with sadness, Scarlett covered her face with her hands.

After a short while, she caught the faint scent of tobacco behind her.

She turned around almost instantly, but her reaction was still too slow. Damian’s hand was already resting gently on her shoulder.

As she turned, Damian chuckled softly at her wary expression. “Like a little puppy.”

He could see she had been crying, but he didn’t ask why. Instead, he teased her lightly, hoping to bring a smile to her face.

Scarlett looked up at him. “How are you always so… sneaky?”

Damian took a clean handkerchief from his pocket. He carefully dabbed the tears from the corner of her eye. “Because when you care about someone, you grow eyes all over your body, watching that person every moment, everywhere.”
