Chapter 187 Distant Care

If Scarlett’s indifference toward him was one thing, her apparent lack of reaction to their daughter’s illness was another.

After hesitating a few seconds, Vincent walked over to the sofa. He looked down and asked quietly, “Sabrina said Vanessa isn’t feeling well. Do you want to come back with me?”

Scarlett didn’t turn around. “I won’t go back. You go,” she refused flatly.

Before Vincent could respond, she sat up on the sofa.

He thought she might still be concerned about Vanessa-that even if she said she wouldn’t go, her actions suggested otherwise.

But instead of getting dressed, Scarlett simply leaned back against the cushions, looked at Vincent, and instructed calmly, “At her age, with swollen lymph nodes, stomach aches are common. When you get back, make sure she takes her medicine and watches her diet. No snacks recently, and avoid spicy or irritating foods.”

Vincent listened in silence. After a long moment, he asked, “Since you’re so concerned, why not go see her yourself?”

Scarlett gave a faint, humorless laugh. “I have work tomorrow. I’m not going back.”

He could feel the chill in her tone but didn’t press further. “Hmm,” he acknowledged.

With that, he left.

Alone again, Scarlett lay on the sofa, all sleepiness gone.

To say she wasn’t worried would be a lie.

But half an hour later, she drifted into a surprisingly peaceful sleep.

When Vincent returned to Ravenshade Villa, the entire house was brightly lit.

Lily was still busy in the kitchen, likely preparing something for Vanessa.

Upstairs, Sabrina was holding the little girl, trying to soothe her.

Perhaps lacking experience, Sabrina was visibly flustered, beads of sweat dotting her forehead.

Vincent entered the room and gently took Vanessa from her arms.

Relieved, Sabrina said, “Vincent, I’ll go downstairs to get some soup for Vanessa.”

Vincent nodded. “Go ahead.”

After she left, he held Vanessa and paced slowly around the room. Seeing his daughter’s pale, pained face twisted his heart.

Vanessa pressed her face against his chest. “Daddy,” she asked hoarsely, “didn’t Mom come back?”

Even though she often claimed to dislike her mother, in moments of sickness, she still longed for her

presence.

Hearing her question, Vincent felt a fresh pang of guilt. “No,” he replied softly.

Vanessa’s eyes reddened, tears spilling over. “Daddy, Mom doesn’t love me anymore.”

Vincent sat on the sofa, looking down at her seriously. “Last time I asked, you mind never seeing Mom again.”

you wouldn’t

Vanessa’s eyes were heavy with exhaustion. She blinked slowly. “But when I’m sick, Mom rubs my tummy.”

She truly believed she didn’t like her mom anymore-yet in her discomfort, she remembered her mother’s tenderness.

Her mom’s hands were always warm. After she rubbed her tummy, the pain really did ease.

Sabrina would try, too, but her hands held no such magic-the ache always lingered.

Thinking of Scarlett’s cold indifference, Vincent didn’t know how to explain it to Vanessa.

After a long pause, he lowered his head and nuzzled her forehead gently. “Daddy can rub it too. Daddy will rub it for you.”

Vanessa gave a soft “Hmm” and lifted her little shirt to expose her belly.

Vincent placed his large hand gently over her stomach. Instead of soothing her, though, Vanessa began to giggle.

Seeing her laugh, Vincent couldn’t help but smile-but then he sobered. “Vanessa, we need to get used to life without Mom from now on, okay?”

Vanessa kicked her legs lightly and shrugged. “I’m already used to it. I just miss Mom when I’m not feeling well. But if you’re with me, Daddy, I won’t miss her.”

Hearing this, Vincent felt a wave of relief. He held his daughter close, kissed her forehead, and promised, “Daddy will spend more time with you from now on. Whenever you call, no matter how busy or far away I am, I’ll come back, okay?”

Vanessa laughed happily. “Okay, okay! Daddy is the best!”

She wrapped her arms around his neck, but a faint, inexplicable sadness lingered in her chest.

Though Daddy’s hands were comforting too, it just wasn’t the same as when Scarlett rubbed her tummy.

Somehow, she still wanted her mother to be the one soothing her.

But it was fine. Having Daddy and Sabrina was enough.

At the first light of dawn, Scarlett was woken by the sound of arguing from downstairs.

After washing up, she opened her door and called over one of the staff.

“What’s going on downstairs?”

The staff member stood with her head slightly bowed. “Ms. Stewart is arguing with Mrs. Stewart.”

Scarlett frowned. “Lucy came back?”
