Chapter 186 Abandoned Again

Scarlett sat dazed on the ground, her eyes vacant, staring into the distance.

Damian came over, held her close, and gently patted her back. “It’s okay now. It’s over,” he murmured softly.

Scarlett’s gaze drifted toward the banquet hall. She could just make out the figures of Vincent carrying Sabrina away.

He had left decisively, without a second thought for her still being at the party.

Scarlett thought, even if he didn’t love her, surely he wouldn’t be so indifferent to her safety?

After ensuring Sabrina was safe, he should have come back to look for her.

But it was all wishful thinking. Vincent never returned-not even a phone call.

He had said he was coming to pick her up. Yet in the end, he had picked up Sabrina instead.

Seeing Scarlett’s distant expression, Damian followed her line of sight.

He too saw Vincent and Sabrina.

Guessing why she was upset, Damian let out a low, disdainful laugh. “Scarlett, you entrusted your life to the wrong person. You’ve not only let yourself down, you…”

You’ve let me down too…

But Damian left those last words unspoken.

Scarlett was indeed heartbroken, but after a while, she began to accept it.

If Vincent didn’t love her, why would he care whether she lived or died?

Once she had composed herself, Scarlett said to Damian, “Thank you for earlier.”

Damian turned his face away, his voice low. “Do you regret it?”

Scarlett answered honestly, “Yes.”

With that, she stood up, ready to leave the venue.

Damian walked beside her. “Since you know he’s not worth it, why waste time being sad?”

Scarlett stopped and looked at him. “Damian, I really am quite calm now.”

It was the truth-though sometimes emotions defied logic.

After all, it had been eight years-nearly three thousand days and nights.

Damian didn’t press further, but he insisted on driving Scarlett back, even if it was to the Stewart Manor.

When they returned, Xavier was surprisingly still awake.

Seeing Scarlett enter the living room alone, he stood up quickly. “Scarlett, why are you back by yourself?”

Scarlett had already prepared an excuse. “Vincent brought me back, but he had something else to attend to, so he left again.”

Xavier still seemed concerned. “What’s wrong? Did you two argue?”

Scarlett offered a faint smile. “Grandpa, we didn’t argue.”

Without any feelings left, how could they even argue?

Xavier was only half-convinced but still urged, “You and Vincent must get along well. Once you’ve recovered your health, have another child for the Stewart family.”

Not wanting to argue, Scarlett simply replied, “Hmm.”

After chatting a while longer, she went upstairs to rest.

Sometime in the latter half of the night, half-asleep, Scarlett felt the bed dip beside her.

Then, someone pulled her into an embrace.

She was a light sleeper and opened her eyes instantly. By the moonlight filtering through the window, she recognized the face-it was Vincent.

“Vincent, why are you back?” she asked, confused.

She struggled slightly, slowly freeing herself from his arms.

Vincent noticed her movement but didn’t stop her, letting her pull away.

After a long moment, he finally spoke, “There was trouble at the party. I had to leave urgently. Are you okay?”

Scarlett said simply, “I’m fine.”

With that, she sat up, got out of bed, and went straight to the sofa.

Seeing this, Vincent asked, puzzled, “What are you doing on the sofa?”

Scarlett lay down. “We’re about to get divorced. It’s better to keep some distance from now on.”

Her aloofness reminded Vincent of how she used to be-every time they met, she had cherished those moments deeply.

She would hold him tightly, unwilling to let go, and tirelessly ask what he wanted to eat, offering to cook for him.

Whenever they stayed at the Stewart Manor, she would proactively curl up in his arms like a cat, trying to please him.

But now, she was like a hedgehog-prickly, sealed off, not letting anyone get close.

The Scarlett who had once loved him so deeply was completely gone, with no trace of her former self left.

Vincent didn’t respond. He stared at the ceiling, gradually lost in thought.

But in the silence, his phone rang sharply.

It was Sabrina.

Answering, he heard her anxious voice. “Vincent, Vanessa is vomiting again, and she’s complaining of stomach pain. Can you come back quickly?”

Hearing this, Vincent quickly sat up. “Okay, I’ll be right back.”

After hanging up, he turned on the light.

He got out of bed, put on his clothes and shoes, and glanced back. Scarlett, lying on the sofa, hadn’t moved at all.

Seeing this, he paused for a moment, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes.
