Chapter 196 Bitter Truths
Finished
Vincent stared at her anxious expression and couldn’t resist a dry, humorless chuckle. “How about we get married again? Then we could get divorced properly this time.”
Scarlett found no amusement in his remark. “Think harder. If you truly can’t remember where they are, we’ll have to apply for replacements.”
Vincent gave a noncommittal “Hmm” and lit a cigarette.
As he lowered his head, Scarlett caught a glimpse of a vivid red mark on his neck. The sight sent a sharp pang through her chest.
His “late night”… had probably been spent with Sabrina, she thought involuntarily.
Vincent took a slow drag from his cigarette. Looking at Scarlett through the haze, he suddenly said, “At Oakland Villa, besides you and me, there’s only Freya who could have…”
But before he could finish, Scarlett cut in, “No, your mother has been here too.”
Vincent paused, then said, “Then I’ll ask her.” It seemed like a long shot, but what if she knew something?
He called Amanda and asked if she had seen their marriage certificates.
Amanda was instantly furious. “What would I have left to take from you two? Would I really steal your marriage certificates? Vincent, have you completely lost your mind?”
After enduring her outburst, Vincent hung up.
Scarlett had heard Amanda’s yelling through the phone. She turned to Vincent and said, “Then replacement is our only option.”
Vincent nodded. “Yeah.”
As Scarlett moved to walk past him toward the door, he called out, “Scarlett.”
“Yes?”
Vincent turned and came to stand directly before her. He looked down at her and voiced the question that had been weighing on his mind. “Why do you suddenly want a divorce?”
Scarlett stood perfectly still, studying his face. The face she had once dreamed of day and night was right in front of her, yet her heart remained completely unmoved.
Hearing his question, Scarlett let out a soft, self-mocking laugh. After a long moment, she

replied, “Vincent, we don’t act like a married couple at all. It’s better to set each other free sooner rather than later.”

A flicker of confusion appeared in Vincent’s eyes. He looked down at her, his tone serious as he asked, “Then what does constitute a married couple, in your eyes?”
Scarlett didn’t know what he was thinking, but she told him honestly, “What you have with Sabrina seems a lot more like it.”
Having said that, she made to leave again. But after a brief hesitation, she looked up at him once more and added, “Oh, and while I really didn’t want to hurt your pride… in bed, it’s honestly only ever three minutes with you.”
Upon hearing this, Vincent’s face darkened instantly, a storm gathering in his eyes. He suddenly grabbed Scarlett’s wrist, leaning in angrily. “What? Have you tried with someone else?” he demanded in a low, tense voice.
Scarlett met his gaze without flinching, her eyes clear and direct. “So what if I have? Vincent, we’re practically divorced already.”
With that, she pulled her hand free from his grasp and walked out without a backward glance.
Vincent watched Scarlett’s retreating figure, the light in his eyes flickering unpredictably. A strange, sour feeling churned in his chest.

After leaving Oakland Villa, Scarlett drove toward Theron Manor. Her mind remained unsettled the entire way.
While stopped at a red light, she suddenly heard her passenger door open. Turning, she was shocked to see a disheveled and weary-looking Elias sliding into the seat beside her.
Scarlett immediately snapped to attention, her tone turning cold and hard. “Get out,” she commanded in a low voice.
Elias didn’t move. He glared at Scarlett, his eyes burning with fierce intensity. “Where is she? Where’s Claire?” he demanded.
Scarlett’s reply was crisp and direct. “I don’t know.”
Malice flashed in Elias’ eyes. “She moved out. She won’t answer my calls. Tell me, did you put
up to this?”

she moved out, why she broke up with you?”

Claire had been with Elias for eight years, giving everything selflessly. She had endured the fallout from his promiscuous lifestyle, had even had an abortion for him.
In recent years, she had been waiting for a proposal that never came, only to be met with repeated infidelity and disappointment.
Elias refused to hear any of it. “But she already forgave me!” he roared violently. “She said she wasn’t angry anymore! She said she would marry me! So where is she? Scarlett, if you didn’t encourage her, would she have run away? Would she ignore my calls?”
Hearing this, Scarlett couldn’t help but respond sarcastically, “Have you ever reflected on your own actions? You’re simply scum. Was she wrong to break up with you?”
Elias didn’t want to hear another word. “Shut up!” he yelled harshly.
Scarlett fell silent, then said to him with icy composure, “Get out of the car.”
Elias’ bloodshot eyes bore into her. He lowered his voice menacingly. “Take me to her.”
Scarlett refused him once more, her voice firm and resolute. “Impossible. I will never take you to her.”
