Chapter 198 A Mother’s Heartache

Her figure was truly stunning. With the professionally done makeup and elegant high heels, even Claire couldn’t take her eyes off her.
“Scarlett, you’ve really got it all. Vincent truly doesn’t know how lucky he is,” Claire said, linking arms with Scarlett and teasing her good-naturedly.
Scarlett looked at her reflection in the mirror and was momentarily stunned herself.
In five years of marriage, Vincent had never taken her to any banquets or formal events. She rarely dressed up so elaborately.
Daily makeup was vastly different from gala makeup. Tonight, clad in the flowing gown her hair cascading down her back, Scarlett’s gentle elegance was on full display.
By the time they arrived at the event venue, many guests had already gathered.

There was a fashion show, a dance area, lounges for business discussions, and even a separate zone with food and games for children.
Shortly after Scarlett and Claire entered, they spotted Vincent in a tailored black tuxedo and Sabrina in a bold, striking red mini-dress. Sabrina was holding onto Vincent’s arm as they headed upstairs, presumably for a business meeting.
Down in the dining area, two children were chatting nearby.
A little boy asked, “Is that pretty lady in the red dress
your mom?”
The little girl was Vanessa. They had their backs to the entrance, so they didn’t see Scarlett and Claire come in.
Vanessa thought for a moment before answering truthfully, “No.”
The boy sounded surprised. “Oh, really? You must be really close.”
Vanessa, eating a small cake and swinging her legs, looked up proudly. “But she’s just like my mom, maybe even better than my mom.”
Hearing this, the boy, in his childish innocence, asked, “Then where is your mom? I’ve never seen your mom pick you up from school. Is she… Is she dead?”
Vanessa paused mid-bite. When she spoke again, her voice was quiet. “Pretty much.”
Behind them, Scarlett and Claire had heard the entire conversation.

Hearing Vanessa describe her that way did hurt Scarlett, but she wasn’t exactly angry.
Claire, however, was different. She couldn’t hold back and called out loudly, “Vanessa!”
Vanessa turned at the sound of her name and saw Scarlett and Claire. She guiltily averted her gaze and didn’t greet them.
After Vanessa was born, Scarlett had unilaterally decided that Claire would be her godmother.
Although Claire could be a bit of a romantic, she had never been anything less than wholeheartedly devoted to Vanessa. Back when Vanessa was still close to Scarlett, she had adored Claire too.
But now, she wouldn’t even address them properly.
The little boy also turned to look. Seeing Vanessa remain silent, he said, “Vanessa, why aren’t you saying hello? Teacher said we should be polite and greet people when we’re out.”
Vanessa’s face flushed with embarrassment. She jumped down from her stool, yelled at the boy, “None of your business!” and then, for good measure, pinched his arm before running off.
The boy, stung by the pinch, immediately started crying loudly.
Witnessing this, Claire turned to Scarlett. “Vanessa is acting like this. Are you really not going to do anything about it?”
Scarlett sighed helplessly. “Do you think she’d let me?”
Remembering how Vanessa hadn’t even called Scarlett “Mom” earlier, Claire conceded, “You’re right. I guess we have to respect her choices.”
Although Scarlett said she wouldn’t interfere, she was still worried inside. She looked in the direction Vanessa had run off, her face filled with concern.
The daughter she gave birth to might not need to be top of her class, but she shouldn’t be using foul language or be so rude. Yet Vanessa wouldn’t listen to anything she said. There was no use worrying about it now.
The little boy, hurt by the pinch, was still sniffling and crying, though not loudly enough to attract much attention.
Just then, a staff member approached Claire. “Hello. Mr. Saxton and the others are waiting for you upstairs.”
Claire acknowledged, “Okay, I’ll be right there.”
She then said to Scarlett, “Scarlett, I have a meeting scheduled to discuss a collaboration. I’ll be

back soon. Why don’t you find a seat in the main hall and grab some food in the meantime?”
Scarlett nodded with a smile. “Go ahead. Don’t worry about me.”
After Claire went upstairs, Scarlett walked over to the still-sniffling little boy. She crouched down in front of him, used a tissue to gently wipe his tears, and comforted him softly, “Hey now, big guys don’t cry, okay?”
The boy’s shoulders still shook slightly, but the loud sobs had stopped. He looked at Scarlett and said obediently, “Miss, you’re so pretty. Even prettier than the lady in the red dress earlier.”
Scarlett’s heart clenched slightly, but a wave of warmth spread through her at the same time.
