Chapter 200 Smeared Reputation

The woman was holding a small plate of food stained with oil. The contents had spilled onto the floor, and the oily residue had dripped down the side of the plate, creating a mess.

Scarlett understood immediately-the young woman must have gotten the oil on her dress.

But the girl’s apology seemed sincere, her face full of remorse. Thinking it was probably unintentional, Scarlett didn’t scold her. “It’s fine,” she said simply.

With that, she left the dining area and headed for the restroom.

Standing in front of the mirror, she turned her back to it and saw a large stain of oil on the fabric. The pure white dress was instantly ruined by the blemish.

Scarlett reached back, trying to clean it, but found she couldn’t properly reach the spot. Even if she could, she realized it wouldn’t come out easily, so she gave up.

After washing her hands and looking up, she saw another figure reflected in the mirror.

Vincent was leaning against the wall, his gaze fixed on the stain on her back. “That person did it on purpose just now,” he stated suddenly.

Scarlett straightened up. She pulled a paper towel to dry her hands and replied, “I’m not sure.”

She genuinely wasn’t. The banquet hall was crowded. It was hard for her to judge if the young woman had done it intentionally, especially since the bump had been on her back—she didn’t have eyes there.

Vincent shifted his posture, crossing his arms as he looked at her. “I saw it clearly. She did it on purpose. Did you offend someone?”

Scarlett was silent for a few seconds before saying, “Even if I did offend someone, it would be someone from the Stewart family.”

Vincent’s gaze deepened as it held hers. “Do you really think anyone from the Stewart family would be that petty?”

Hearing this, Scarlett pressed her lips together in a faint, amused smile but didn’t elaborate.

Whether the Stewart family is petty or not, Vincent might not know, but I certainly do. However, there was no use in saying more, and she didn’t plan to explain.

She turned her head and met his gaze directly. “With the weekend coming up, why don’t we go to the county clerk’s office on Monday to get new copies of our marriage certificates? Then we can move forward with everything else.”

Seeing her complete lack of emotion, Vincent couldn’t help testing the waters. “Do we have to be in such a hurry?”

He leaned in slightly, easily enveloping her in his shadow.

Scarlett looked up at him, displeased. “What do you want, then?”

Vincent’s lips curled into a disdainful smirk. “You really think three minutes is my limit?”

Scarlett frowned at him. “I’ve experienced it firsthand. How could it be false?”

Vincent suddenly raised his hand and lifted her chin. His eyes bore directly into hers, his tone laced with a hint of resentment. “Try it again, and you’ll know for sure.”

Scarlett found his action flirtatious and disrespectful. Remembering that this same hand had also touched Sabrina filled her with revulsion. She pushed his hand away forcefully. “Vincent, that really won’t be necessary. This Monday, we’re getting the certificates reissued.”

With that, she stepped around him and left the restroom.

Vincent’s eyes followed her, lingering on the stain on her back, his brow furrowing slightly.

When Scarlett returned to the ballroom, Claire had already come downstairs. She approached Scarlett, asking curiously, “Where did you go? I was looking for you everywhere just now.”

Scarlett smiled and explained, “I just went to the restroom to wash up.”

Claire noticed the stain on Scarlett’s back. “What happened here?” she asked, frowning.

Scarlett forced a smile. “It’s nothing serious. Don’t let it ruin your mood.”

Claire wanted to ask more, but a small group of people not far away turned and looked over at them simultaneously.

The distance wasn’t great, and Scarlett and Claire could hear their whispers,

“Is that the woman who seduced Ms. Crowley’s father?”

“Yes, Ms. Crowley just said it’s her, the one with the oil stain on her back. She specializes in seducing middle-aged men, wreaking havoc in their families. Even after being clearly rejected, she still throws herself at them, letting them have their way for free.”

“Ugh, how does a woman like her deserve to be at this event?”

“What a disgrace. She looks decent, but she’s actually a sly temptress.”

“She has no shame. If I were her, I’d want to find a hole to hide in.”

Claire turned to look at Scarlett, confused. “Are they talking about you?”

Scarlett was also baffled. She nodded uncertainly. “I think so?”

Claire couldn’t take it. She immediately stepped forward to confront them, but Scarlett grabbed her arm and shook her head. “Let’s listen a bit more. Let’s see how far they’ll take this absurdity!”

Before the gossiping crowd could finish, Daniel and Harris came down from the second floor. As they descended, Vincent also happened to be returning from the direction of the restrooms.
