Chapter 219 Silent Goodbyes

Scarlett glanced subtly at Vanessa. Seeing she wasn’t resisting, Scarlett agreed softly, “Alright.”

Surprisingly, Vanessa didn’t make a fuss either, though she didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic.

Hearing Scarlett agree, Clara suppressed her usual impatience with Vanessa. She looked back and asked curiously, “Vanessa, have you finished your autumn painting assignment yet?”

At school, Clara had never been particularly fond of Vanessa, and after seeing how Vanessa treated Scarlett, she liked her even less. But since Vanessa was Scarlett’s daughter, she could try to be civil.

Vanessa, still clutching the maple leaves, looked at Clara’s easel and frowned. “The teacher gave us homework?”

Clara’s brow furrowed as well. “Didn’t anyone tell you?”

Vanessa shook her head. “I didn’t know about it.”

Clara held back the urge to lecture her and explained patiently, “The teachers post weekend assignments in the parents‘ group chat. Parents are supposed to tell their kids. Didn’t anyone inform you?”

Vanessa pressed her lips together tightly, refusing to answer.

Seeing her silence, Clara continued, “My mom told me. She had to work today, so Auntie is helping me with my

homework.”

Sitting nearby, Scarlett felt a sharp pang in her heart as she listened to their exchange. She knew exactly why Vanessa was unaware–Sabrina and Vincent had neglected to check the messages.

Looking at Vanessa, Scarlett felt both distressed and helpless, unsure what she could possibly

say.

Clara pulled several sheets of paper from her easel and offered them to Vanessa. “Here, you can have some of my paper. We can paint together. Auntie can teach us both.”

Vanessa looked down at the offered paper but refused to take it. After a few seconds, she pushed them back. “No, thank you. Sabrina will help me paint later.” With that, she turned and walked

away.

Watching her lonely retreating figure, Scarlett instinctively started to call out, “Van-” But the name caught in her throat, and no sound came out.

As Vanessa walked further away and Scarlett made no move to follow, Lily grew increasingly anxious. She called out loudly, “Vanessa, wait for me!” Lily, who had just settled down, had to scramble to her feet and hurry after her.

After a few steps, she turned back to look at Scarlett. “Mrs. Stewart, perhaps you should go comfort her? You are her mother, after all.”

Scarlett didn’t look at Lily, instead carefully placing the papers Clara had pulled out back onto the easel. But she replied calmly, “Lily, you go comfort her. I need to stay with Clara for her painting. I can’t leave her now.”

Lily sighed helplessly and shook her head. “Very well then.”

After catching up with Vanessa, Lily took her hand and coaxed gently, “Vanessa, your mother does care about you. You are her child.”

Vanessa didn’t respond, just continued walking, tears streaming silently down her face. She knew her mother hadn’t followed. She knew her mother really wasn’t going to bother with her anymore. She thought she didn’t like her mom, so why did she feel like crying?

Once in the car, Vanessa cried and demanded to call Vincent.

Vincent answered quickly, his voice gentle. “Vanessa, what’s wrong?”

Vanessa sobbed, “Daddy, the teacher gave us homework. Why didn’t you or Sabrina tell me?”

Vincent explained, “Don’t cry, sweetheart. I have been very busy and didn’t check the kindergarten messages. I’m sorry, okay?”

Vanessa cried even harder. “What about Sabrina? Why didn’t she tell me?”

Vincent explained again, “Sabrina is busy with her research. She must have forgotten to check the messages too.”

Tears poured down Vanessa’s face. “But it’s due tomorrow!”

Vincent’s heart ached. He had no choice but to say, “Then I will come back right now and take you to finish

your homework.”

Back at the park, after Vanessa left, Scarlett began teaching Clara how to paint maple leaves and the autumn grass.

As they were painting, someone called out from behind, “Ms. Theron?”

Scarlett turned toward the voice and saw Eric. Next to him stood Felix, who had traded his usual tailored suits for casual wear and sneakers. The man, now in his thirties, showed no trace of age, only growing more distinguished with time.

It was a cloudy day, the light shifting between soft and bright.

Felix stood on the grass in his light–colored attire, with large, fluffy white clouds drifting above him. Beneath the clouds stood this strikingly handsome man.

Scarlett withdrew her gaze, looking at Eric with a warm smile. “Eric.”

Eric had lost his mother during childbirth, and over the years, he had quietly yearned for maternal affection. Around Scarlett, he seemed to find a little of that warmth he’d been missing.
