Scarlett’s response was painfully rational. “We’re not even friends, Damian. You really don’t need to go this far for me.”
Damian shot to his feet, his eyes burning into her. “So you were lying to me that day after all.”
Scarlett frowned, confused by what he meant.
When he didn’t explain, she pressed on, “And please don’t come to my house anymore.”
Damian’s hands clenched. She could see a slight tremor run through him.
He seemed to be replaying something from that afternoon in his mind. When he opened his eyes again, they were bloodshot and cold.
“Scarlett, I’ve known many women,” he said, his voice low, “but you’re the one who understands the least about what really matters.”
With that, he turned and walked away.
He stopped by the play area and called out, “Eric, we’re leaving.”
Eric looked up, surprised. “Already?”
Damian didn’t repeat himself. “Now.”
Eric didn’t understand what had happened, but he knew better than to argue.
Damian left with the boy, his steps firm and final.
This wasn’t just jealousy or anger anymore.
He was starting to think that maybe he shouldn’t keep forcing his way into her life.
Scarlett was still married. Whether her marriage was happy or not, she clearly still loved
Vincent.
All those words she’d said, those promises she’d once made–they meant nothing now.
If she didn’t care anymore, why was he still holding on?
Clara returned to the table and wrapped her arms around Scarlett’s neck. “Auntie, what’s wrong?”
Scarlett held her close, her voice thick. “It’s nothing, sweetie.”

For some reason, she felt like crying.
Clara patted her back gently. “Did Mr. Langley make you sad?”
ર
Scarlett shook her head. “No, it’s not him. It’s my fault.”
Clara nuzzled against her cheek. “You’re a good auntie, and Mr. Langley is good too. He can draw maple leaves, wheat fields, and even farmers. He can draw things I’ve never even seen.”
Scarlett rested her chin on Clara’s shoulder. “Do you like him that much?”
Clara thought for a moment. “Yeah. But I like Nolan too.”
Scarlett couldn’t help but laugh, ruffling her hair. “Our Clara is already learning to judge people, huh?”
Auntie? Which one do you like more?”
Clara pulled back and asked, “What about you, Auntie? Which one
The question caught Scarlett off guard.
After a long pause, she smiled softly. “I don’t like either of them.”
Nolan was outstanding and had a clean reputation.
Damian might have been known as a playboy, but after spending time with him, Scarlett felt he was a good person deep down.
But no matter how good they were, how could she dare to hope for anything?
She wasn’t even divorced yet.
The next day, after getting ready for work, Scarlett called Vincent.
He picked up quickly–or rather, Sabrina did. “Hello, looking for Vincent?”
Scarlett didn’t hang up. Instead, she said calmly, “Yes. Please give him the phone.”
Sabrina knew exactly who it was. She didn’t disconnect.
A few seconds later, Scarlett could hear her handing over the phone.
It was clear they were in the same room.
“Vincent, it’s for you.”

The sound of running water came through the line.

Scarlett guessed Vincent was in the shower and Sabrina was in the bedroom.
Then Vincent’s voice came out. “Got it. Sabrina, can you grab me a pair of boxers?”
Sabrina replied, “Okay. I’ll leave the phone on the vanity. Don’t forget to answer it.”
After the sound of a door closing, the water stopped.
A moment later, Vincent said, “I’ll call you back later.”
Just before the call ended, Scarlett thought she heard Sabrina murmur, “Vincent, I haven’t showered yet…
She didn’t need to think hard to imagine what was happening.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
About forty minutes later, Vincent called back.
Scarlett was already doing her rounds at the hospital.
Unable to take the call, she let it go to voicemail.
After she finished, she called him back. He answered.
“What is it?”
Scarlett got straight to the point. “I can take time off later. Let’s go to the courthouse and get our marriage certificate reissued.”
But Vincent refused. “I have a meeting. Besides, I’ve made my
conditions very
clear.”
Scarlett knew he meant sleeping together one last time before the divorce.
But why should she agree?
Before, when she didn’t care, she might have accepted being intimate with him.
But now it was different. The thought disgusted her.
Still, if he was going to be difficult…
Without overthinking it, she said, “If you’re that desperate, I’m sure you can find someone else to help you with that.”

Then she hung up.
If he wanted to play dirty, she could too.

If he was too busy to reissue the marriage certificate, she’d go to Stewart Manor and come clean to Xavier.
