So, despite the risk of earning another glare from Clara, Eric slid in beside Scarlett anyway.
Damian considered calling the boy back, but it was too late.
Eric turned to him and said, “Mr. Langley, come on, join us!”
With a quiet sigh, he took a seat across from them.
Scarlett handed him the menu. “Mr. Langley, would you mind ordering for Eric? I’m not sure
what he likes.”
Damian accepted the menu without a word.
He flipped through it distractedly, pointing at two items at random. “These will be fine.”
Scarlett noted the choices and signaled for the server.
Damian made no move to pay, so Scarlett settled the bill quietly.
An awkward silence settled over the table as they waited for the food.
When the pizza and burger arrived, Scarlett realized Damian hadn’t ordered anything for himself.
She studied him carefully. He hadn’t seemed like himself lately–distant, almost cold.
But then again, now that he’d lost interest, maybe this was how he really was.
Perhaps it was for the best. They moved in different circles anyway.
Pushing her thoughts aside, she finally asked, “Aren’t you going to eat, Mr. Langley?”
Her tone was polite, carefully measured, and distant.
Hearing her concern, Damian muttered under his breath, “I’m full–on anger.”
Scarlett’s brow furrowed slightly. Seeing his foul mood, she decided not to press further.
But her silence seemed to irritate him even more.
The two children clearly sensed the tension.
As soon as they finished eating, Eric tapped Clara’s hand. “Clara, want to go play with the building blocks?”

Eager for an escape, Clara agreed right away.
Once the children had left, only Scarlett and Damian remained at the table.

Damian stayed quiet, leaning back in his chair, lost in thought. His silence was heavy, almost unnerving.
Scarlett didn’t attempt small talk. She simply lowered her head and began scrolling through her phone.
There wasn’t much to see, so she opened her social media feed.
That was when she remembered Damian’s injured finger.
She looked up and found his eyes already fixed on her–with a hint of resentment in them.
Trying to ignore it, she said, “Let me see your finger.”
Damian stared back. He’d wanted her to notice he was upset.
But her first words to him were about his injury.
Caught off guard, he averted his gaze.
He couldn’t very well show her the nonexistent injury, so he stood up abruptly. “I’ll be right back–restroom.”
Scarlett watched him leave, puzzled by his odd behavior.
Damian returned a few minutes later and took his seat again.
Without a word, he held his hand out to her. “Here.”
Scarlett looked down and saw his finger wrapped in a tissue now stained with blood.
She always carried a small first–aid kit in her bag–bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze–just in case Clara got hurt while they were out.
She retrieved the supplies and carefully unwrapped the tissue.
A deep, fresh cut was revealed.
Scarlett paused almost imperceptibly.

As a doctor, she could tell this wound was recent–and clearly different from the one she’d seen in his social media post that morning.
She didn’t understand why he’d done it, but she didn’t call him out.
His finger was still bleeding steadily, so she focused on stopping it.
After a quick cleanup and bandaging, she said, “There. Make sure you change the dressing regularly.”
She packed the medical supplies back into her bag.
When she looked up again, he was still watching her. She met his gaze directly.
Feeling uneasy under her stare, Damian looked down at his bandaged finger. “Is it serious?”
Instead of answering, Scarlett asked quietly, “Damian, what exactly do you want from me?”
The dining area was nearly empty now. In the play area nearby, Clara and Eric were happily stacking blocks.
ing her question, Damian realized she’d seen through his ruse.
en he’d intentionally hurt his finger in the restroom, he’d forgotten she was a doctor.
only occurred to him while she was treating him.
But it was too late.
Even though he was still upset, Damian answered her honestly, “I want you to be happy. I want you to stay away from Vincent. I want you… to be mine.”
Scarlett studied him. In his eyes, she saw nothing but sincerity.
But even so, she found it hard to believe that Damian–known for his flirtatious reputation- could truly have feelings for her.
