Xavier fell into a thoughtful silence at her words.

As the elevator doors slid open, he finally spoke with a touch of irritation, “Oh, never mind! There’s no reasoning with you young people!”
Stepping out into the corridor, Scarlett watched his retreating back and murmured under her breath, “It’s not about reasoning, Grandpa. You’re just being selfish.”
Xavier was already too far away to hear, but Vincent, walking beside her, caught every word.
He didn’t confront her immediately, instead filing her comment away mentally.
Back in the hospital suite, Xavier completed his evening routine and settled into bed.
The private room included a separate sleeping area for family members–perfectly adequate for both Scarlett and Vincent.
But the thought of sharing a bed with Vincent made Scarlett distinctly uncomfortable.
Nevertheless, they ended up lying side by side in the dim light.
Once Xavier’s breathing became even and steady in sleep, Vincent turned onto his side. He slid an arm around Scarlett’s waist, pulling her firmly against his chest.
Her cool back met his warm torso.
In the contrast of temperatures, Vincent brought his lips close to her ear and whispered, “Do you really believe Grandpa was wrong?”
Scarlett stiffened slightly. “Vincent, I’m trying to sleep.”
He acted as if he hadn’t heard. “Grandpa treated Grandma exceptionally well. He loved her deeply throughout their marriage.”
At this, Scarlett’s eyes snapped open. She turned her head to glare at him, whispering sharply, “Love isn’t about confinement. Love isn’t about making someone change who they are for you.”
Vincent met her gaze directly, his voice still hushed. “Then what is love, in your view?”
Scarlett wasn’t sure how to answer. After a moment’s hesitation, she replied honestly, “It’s like what you have with Sabrina. You-”
Before she could finish, Xavier’s eyes suddenly opened. He addressed Vincent, “Vincent, I almost forgot to tell you. This weekend is Ethan’s birthday gala. I want you two to attend as my

Vincent considered for a moment. “Which day exactly?”
“Saturday evening,” Xavier clarified.
Vincent agreed. “Alright.”
Soon, Xavier’s breathing evened out again in sleep.

Once certain his grandfather was sound asleep, Vincent turned back to Scarlett. “What were you saying earlier?”
But drowsiness was already pulling at her consciousness. Scarlett didn’t respond, choosing silence instead.
When she woke the next morning, Vincent was already gone.
Xavier remained asleep, though a staff member had already delivered breakfast to the room.
Remembering she had work commitments, Scarlett instructed the attendant to stay with Xavier and left the hospital.
That evening, Vincent didn’t come to pick up Scarlett, nor did she plan to return to the hospital to stay overnight with Xavier.
Instead, she went back to Theron Manor.
As soon as she stepped through the door, Clara came bursting out from the living room and clung to her like an excited little monkey.
“Auntie, I missed you so much! I haven’t seen you for two whole days!”
Clara nuzzled her face against Scarlett’s, expressing her longing with childish enthusiasm.
Scarlett picked up her niece, pressing her own cheek against the child’s plump one. “I missed you too.”
Clara gently poked Scarlett’s cheek. “Auntie, my school has a fall field trip next week. Will you come with me?”
“A fall field trip?” Scarlett’s tone held mild puzzlement. It was already early winter; wasn’t it rather late for such an outing?
But Clara didn’t see any issue, simply nodding earnestly. “Yes, that’s what the teacher said.”
Scarlett mentally, reviewed her work schedule. “Clara, I’m scheduled to work that day. How

about Mom and Dad take you?”
Clara explained, “Mom said she’ll go, but Daddy can’t make it. So I want you to come with us.”
Seeing no alternative, Scarlett reluctantly agreed. “Alright, I’ll try to swap my shift. If I can arrange it, I’ll go with you.”
Clara jumped for joy, waving her arms excitedly.

It being Saturday, Scarlett had allowed herself to sleep in.
By the time she woke, it was already after 10 a.m.
Just then, Vincent called.
Scarlett answered to hear him say, “I’ll pick you up this afternoon. We need to get ready for the
event.”
He arrived just before noon.
After collecting her, they went directly to an upscale styling salon.
Vincent escorted Scarlett inside and informed her, “I need to stop by the office for a brief meeting. I’ll return to collect you afterward.”
Scarlett didn’t question his whereabouts, simply nodding. “Alright.”
She spent the afternoon having her hair and makeup meticulously done.
The stylist selected a sophisticated black evening gown for her. Her hair was styled in a low chignon at the nape of her neck, with a few artfully arranged tendrils framing her face- accentuating her delicate features.
The makeup artist completed the elegant look with carefully chosen jewelry and earrings.
