Damian didn’t hesitate to express Scarlett’s importance to him in front of others.
Hearing this, the man immediately understood Scarlett held special significance for Damian and quickly offered flattering words, “You’re a fortunate man, Mr. Langley.”
Damian smiled faintly. “It’s only good fortune if I can win her heart.”
Though Scarlett wasn’t actively participating in the conversation, she heard every word clearly. She felt increasingly bewildered, uncertain why Damian behaved this way toward her.
Seeing the situation, the man bowed slightly toward Scarlett. “Miss, let me propose a toast to you.”
Damian reached out to intercept the gesture. “My apologies. My darling doesn’t drink.”
Hearing this, Scarlett finally turned her head. “I can drink,” she told Damian firmly.
Then she picked up a glass of red wine, clinked it with the man’s, and finished it in one go.
Seeing her cooperation, the man complimented her several more times, seized the opportunity to leave his business card, and politely excused himself.
After he left, Damian moved his chair directly beside Scarlett’s. He turned to look at her seriously. “Are you upset about something?”
Scarlett continued peeling the chestnut without meeting his gaze. “Not upset. nothing to be particularly happy about either.”
There’s just
Seeing her subdued mood, he couldn’t help asking, “Then tell me, what would make you happy?”
The chestnut in her hand seemed undercooked and difficult to peel, so she eventually gave up and placed it on the table.
She looked up at Damian with sincere eyes. “I like a simple, peaceful life.”
He was surprised her desires were so modest. He responded immediately, “I can give you that.”
Scarlett heard him and smiled faintly. “Damian, how many people born into wealthy families can truly live a simple life? You’re no exception.”
Damian looked down at his own hands, then held them out for her to see. “If that’s what you want, these hands can bring you wealth and luxury, or they can plant flowers and vegetables for you.”

Scarlett looked down at his hands. They were beautifully shaped, with distinct knuckles and long, slender fingers.
For a moment, she felt dazed, but still maintained her gentle smile. “Damian, birds and fish walk different paths. We come from different worlds.”
Hearing this, Damian grew visibly agitated. He wanted to say he could give up his status and position, but before he could, someone else called his name.
“Damian.” This time, it was a woman’s voice.
Damian’s eyes darkened momentarily. He took a deep breath before turning to look.
Scarlett also observed the approaching young woman. She recognized her–the same girl who had accompanied Damian to the previous event.
Not only had she attended the event with him, but Damian had also been intimately touching her leg in the car.
Remembering this, Scarlett lowered her eyes, pressing her lips slightly. Someone like Damian could never truly return to an ordinary life.
Seeing it was Kylie Warren, Damian controlled his temper.
Kylie twirled playfully in front of him. “Well? Do I look nice today?”
Damian glanced briefly and nodded. “Yes, very beautiful.”
Kylie was direct. “I dressed up just for you.”
Listening to their conversation, Scarlett straightened up and quietly moved her chair further
away.
Damian offered a polite smile. “You put thought into it.”
Kylie sat down beside Damian, enthusiastically linking her arm with his. “When the banquet begins, will you sit with me?”
Damian looked down at her hand on his arm, frowned slightly, gently pushed it away, and smiled at her. “No, I’ll be sitting with my darling.”
Then he turned to look at Scarlett.
Noticing she had already moved two seats away, he frowned with displeasure, leaned over, grabbed her chair, and pulled her back to his side.

Kylie’s curious gaze followed the movement, and when she clearly saw Scarlett’s face, the smile vanished from her own.
Kylie remembered that last time at the intersection, she and Damian had been on their way to a dinner engagement.
While waiting at the traffic light, a man had approached Scarlett’s car, an argument seemed to break out inside her vehicle, and the car hadn’t moved when the light turned green.
When the light changed, Damian should have driven off, but instead he got out and confronted the man.
After chasing him away, he appeared to exchange words with the driver of the other car.
Kylie, sitting in the passenger seat, hadn’t heard what was said, but when Damian returned to the car, his eyes were unusually bright.
So, Kylie had curiously glanced at the driver of the vehicle.
