Her makeup was flawlessly applied that evening, highlighting her sharp, elegant features. Every blink of her lashes seemed to send a subtle ripple through Damian’s composure.
The black evening gown hugged Scarlett’s curves just right, its dark fabric a striking contrast against her pale skin.
Standing there in the dim light, she left Damian’s thoughts in disarray.
He knew perfectly well she was still married–that he shouldn’t overstep–but his body responded more honestly than his conscience.
His arm found its way around her waist, drawing her closer as he leaned in, lips just a breath
away.
He wanted to kiss her.
More than anything, he wanted to kiss her.
Sensing his intention, Scarlett didn’t pull back. Instead, she closed her eyes.
A thought crossed her mind–if Vincent was already involved with Sabrina, what did it matter if something happened between her and Damian?
She was a grown woman with needs of her own. If Vincent couldn’t meet them, why not let Damian try?
Even if he was a flirt, where was the harm in a little fun?
Damian’s lips descended, but at the last moment, he held back. The kiss landed softly at the corner of her mouth.
If he had kissed her properly, he knew he wouldn’t have been able to hold back his desire.
But he couldn’t let himself do that.
Feeling him withdraw, Scarlett opened her eyes, a hint of confusion in her voice. “Why did you stop?”
Damian turned his face away. The tips of his ears were flushed, betraying the desire he was struggling to restrain.
When he finally spoke, his voice was rough, like gravel warmed by the sun. “This isn’t just about me. I have to think about what’s right for you.”

Scarlett studied him, perplexed. “Why are you so good to me?”

Damian lifted his gaze toward the night sky for a few seconds before looking back at her, his expression earnest. “If you agree to let me be the one for you, I’ll tell you why.”
Scarlett frowned, letting out a soft scoff. “Damian, you haven’t had that much to drink. Why are you talking like this again?”
She hadn’t taken any of his words seriously since that night in her bedroom.
He’d been drunk then–she doubted much of what he’d said was genuine.
Damian turned back to her, gently taking her hand and guiding it to rest against his abdomen, his eyes never leaving hers. “I’m not talking nonsense. You can feel it–my body could give you something different. I promise, once you try me, you won’t think about Vincent anymore.”
His words were bold, tempting and teasing without shame.
Scarlett tried to pull her hand back, but Damian held it firmly in place. Through the fabric of his shirt, she could feel the heat of his skin and the defined muscles beneath.
Her cheeks flushed instantly, and she lowered her head, muttering, “You… you have no shame.”
Seeing her blush, Damian couldn’t help but smile. He released her hand but added softly, “You look incredible tonight.”
Scarlett withdrew her hand, feeling unsettled. She moved to the swing chair and sat down.
Without looking at him, she still replied, “You don’t look so bad yourself.”
Damian chuckled and took a seat beside her on the swing. His laughter was light and clear. “If you like it, I’ll dress like this every day.”
Scarlett didn’t respond this time, letting silence settle between them.
From inside the banquet hall, the sounds of clinking glasses, laughter, and lively conversation drifted out endlessly.
Remembering it was Ethan’s birthday celebration, Scarlett took a moment to steady herself before speaking again. “We should head back. If Ethan notices we’re gone, he’ll come looking.”
Leaving before the party ended would be rude to the hosts. They’d been outside long enough- it was time to return.
Damian understood, so he stood and walked back with Scarlett toward the hall.
Near the entrance, Scarlett noticed a small group gathered around Vincent, raising their glasses

Sabrina had risen as well, standing beside him with her own wine glass in hand.
Someone offered a compliment, “Mr. Stewart, you’re a lucky man to have such a remarkable woman by your side. You two make quite the pair–a match made in heaven.”
Vincent smiled, clinking his glass with the others before glancing at Sabrina beside him. Looking back, he replied, “I appreciate the kind words.”
Watching the scene, Scarlett felt neither sorrow nor joy. She simply returned to her seat at the table. Damian followed and sat down beside her.
Zachary, noticing their return, quickly poured wine for Scarlett and raised his glass toward hers. “Scarlett, this one’s for you.”
Before she could fully process his gesture, he had already finished his drink.
