Damian stepped into the shadow of a large oak tree and slowly zoomed in on the photo to read Scarlett’s wishes.
“May my family stay healthy and safe.
“May my career continue to progress smoothly.
“I hope to meet a good man someday.”
A smile tugged irresistibly at Damian’s lips.
The first wish–well, as long as the Therons kept up with their check–ups, that should be fine.
The second he could help with indirectly.
And the third… meet a good man?
Wasn’t he right here?
But how could he make her see that?
Lost in thought, he noticed an old man sitting at a small folding table a little way off, with a hand–painted sign that read “Psychic Readings“. An idea sparked.
He glanced back at Scarlett. She was still in the crowd, completely absorbed in the street performers.
Damian walked over to the reader.
After a brief, quiet negotiation, he transferred a generous payment to the man’s mobile.
By the time the acrobatics show ended, Scarlett looked around but couldn’t spot Damian. Suddenly, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
“Looking for me, sweetheart?”
She turned to find Damian standing there, a necklace dangling from his outstretched hand. He tilted his head, a bright, tender smile on his face.
For a second, her heart fluttered–but she quickly looked away. “It’s getting late. We should head back.”
As she turned to go, Damian caught her wrist. “Stay a little longer.”

Scarlett glanced down at his hand. “Let go first.”

“Only if you promise to stay with me a while more.”
“Fine.”

He released her, but at the same time pressed the necklace into her palm. “Saw it at one of the stalls. It’s not fancy. Just thought you might like it.”
Scarlett held the delicate chain. She wasn’t used to luxury pieces, but she could tell this wasn’t some cheap trinket. Feeling awkward, she tried to hand it back. “Damian, I can buy my own jewelry. Thank you, but you really don’t have to.”
Seeing her refusal, Damian took it back. His expression darkened. “If you don’t want it, I’ll just toss it.” He drew his arm back as if to throw it into the nearby bushes.
“Damian!” Scarlett stared at him, exasperated. “What are you doing?”
He met her gaze evenly. “You said you didn’t want it.”
“That doesn’t mean you just throw it away! It still cost money.”
A smile returned to his lips. “So, do you want it or not?”
Scarlett opened her mouth to refuse again, but Damian raised his hand–the necklace still safely curled in his palm. “Last chance,” he said, his tone suddenly serious. “Do you want it?”
It was as if, if she said no again this time, he really would cast it aside for good.
He had a way of backing her into a corner. Sighing in defeat, she said, “Fine. Give it here. I’ll hold onto it for now.”
Satisfied, Damian placed it back into her hand.
They continued walking. The crowd had thinned out.
As they passed a small canopy with a few tables, an older man in loose, bohemian–style clothing called out, “Young lady, wait a moment.”
Scarlett turned. The man had a short, salt–and–pepper beard and an air of weathered wisdom. He looked like the kind of intuitive reader you might find at a street fair.
She pointed to herself, confused. “Me?”
The man gestured to the empty chair across from him. “Sit. Let me read for you.”
Scarlett offered a polite smile. “No, thank you.”

“Don’t worry,” he said warmly. “I won’t charge you if it doesn’t ring true. Think of it just as a conversation.”
She was still hesitating when Damian gave her a gentle nudge. “Go on. Let’s hear what he has to say.”
The reader nodded. “Exactly. Sometimes it helps to talk things through.”
Eventually, Scarlett sat down.
After asking for her birth date, the man spent a few moments in quiet contemplation, his half–closed.

Then he spoke softly, “You work in healing… a doctor, yes? You’re capable, but you haven’t yet reached your full potential. There’s a strong energy of success around you–in time, you’ll achieve great recognition. But your current marriage…” He paused, his tone turning sympathetic. “It’s become a weight. It drains your spirit and clouds your focus. Carrying it longer will only exhaust you further. Some ties are meant to be released–the sooner you make a clean break, the sooner you’ll find your footing.”
