Scarlett sat at the small table, listening with growing unease. How could he know so many specifics?

Could this man actually have some kind of insight?

Damian stood beside her. After hearing the reader’s words, he gave a subtle, satisfied nod, then watched Scarlett, waiting for her reaction.

Scarlett felt disoriented by what she’d heard. Against her better judgment, a spark of curiosity about her future, especially her romantic life, was ignited.

The old man noticed her shifting interest. “Do my words resonate, young lady?”

Instead of answering, Scarlett asked, “You said I would have two more children in the future?”

The reader nodded. “Yes, that is what I see.”

Scarlett turned her head to look up at Damian. “Could you give us a moment, please?”

Damian frowned. “Something I can’t hear?”

“It’s… personal,” she said.

Hearing that, he relented. “Alright.”

Once Damian had walked a short distance away, Scarlett leaned in slightly. “Can you tell… who my future husband will be?”

The old man stroked his beard once more, a sage–like smile on his lips. “Young lady, some people are written into your story by fate itself. The bond is already tied; struggling against it is futile. Acceptance will bring you peace far sooner than resistance.”

Scarlett heard him but didn’t engage. “How much do I owe you?”

“My reading did not satisfy you, so there is no charge.”

Ignoring his refusal, Scarlett leaned over and transferred a hundred dollars to his mobile payment account.

As she straightened to leave, his voice followed her. “It is pointless to be stubborn. The one meant for you bears the surname Langley. There will be no other.”

Scarlett heard the words but didn’t acknowledge them. She simply walked away.

Damian, seeing her depart, quickly caught up. “What’s wrong?” he asked, seeing her stony expression.

Scarlett stopped and turned, studying his face for a long moment. Looking at his features, she could recall no deep history between them, certainly no promises.

The reader’s words had to be nonsense. Perhaps there were kernels of truth, but that didn’t make him infallible.

Her prolonged silence made Damian anxious. “Sweetheart, did that so–called psychic say something upsetting?”

He had, after all, paid the man to plant the idea that he was her destined partner. But not being present, he didn’t know the exact script. He worried the man had overplayed his hand and offended her.

Scarlett’s continued cold silence worried him further. He turned back toward the canopy, muttering, “I’m going to ask him what he said. How dare he upset you? I’ll have a word with him.”

“Then tell me what he said,” Damian pressed, his expression determined.

How could she repeat the actual prediction? Instead, she invented a harmless, generic misfortune. “He just said… that I have a difficult road ahead. That my energy is complicated and might bring challenges to any partner. He suggested after my divorce, I should perhaps stay single to avoid causing… complications.”

But as soon as the words left her mouth, Damian suddenly pulled her into a tight embrace. He pressed a gentle finger to her lips, his voice filled with superstitious alarm. “Shh, don’t say things like that. Don’t give those words any power. They’re not true.”
