Vincent looked at her softly and asked, Why don’t you say anything to Mommy?

Vanessa didn’t answer, just kept her eyes fixed on him.

He gave her a gentle smile. Mommy was the one who carried you all the way to the hospital. She’s been so worried. If you don’t talk to her, she’ll be really sad. You understand that, right?

At those words, Vanessa’s eyes instantly welled up.

Part of her felt she was supposed to be upset with her mom, but another part just wanted her mother to stay closelike right now, all she really wanted was to be held and fall asleep in her mom’s arms.

But for some reason, she couldn’t make herself say it. Still, since her dad had asked, she finally whispered, Mom.

Hearing that, Scarlett quickly took Vanessa’s hand. Her own eyes were redrimmed as she replied, I’m right here, sweetie.

Vanessa seemed to settle a little, but soon a nurse entered the room pushing a cart.

We need to place an IV line for Vanessa,” the nurse said kindly. It might be easier if both parents wait outside for a few minutes.

The moment Vanessa heard she was getting a needle, she burst into tears. Mom, I don’t want a shot! I want to go home!

Scarlett’s heart clenched at the sound of her daughter’s cries, but she knew the IV was necessary. Gritting her teeth, she stood up and gently guided Vincent out of the room.

Seeing her mom leave, Vanessa cried even harder.

Outside, Vanessa’s sobs echoed down the hallway. Scarlett braced her hands against the wall, her whole body trembling as tears streamed silently down her face.

Seeing her like that, Vincent couldn’t hold back. He stepped closer and rested a hand lightly on her shoulder. She’s going to be okay,he said quietly. I’m here. We’ll get through this together.”

But Scarlett felt weak all over, her heart racing wildly. Each cry from inside the room felt like a tug on her very nerves. This was her daughterher own flesh and bloodin pain, and it tore at her.

When Vincent moved to pull her into a hug, she suddenly pushed his hand away.

Don’t touch me, Vincent!Scarlett looked up,

her eyes

bloodshot and blazing with a mix of

hurt and anger.

He withdrew his hand silently.

Inside, Vanessa’s cries grew louder, each one sharp and desperate. The sound was almost too much for Scarlett to bear.

Vincent felt it too. Though his expression remained controlled, worry churned inside him. This was his only daughterif anything serious happened to her, he knew he’d never forgive himself.

Scarlett tried to steady herself, not wanting to lash out or place blame. But as Vanessa’s crying continued, rising in distress, she finally snapped.

She turned on Vincent, her tearfilled eyes full of accusation. I told you this would hurt her, Vincent! Why didn’t you listen to me?

Her chest heaved with emotion. In all their years of marriage, even during his long absences, she had never broken down like this. But now, standing outside that hospital room, she shouted at him with everything she had.

Vincent had never seen her like thisnot even when she asked for a divorce. Her words left him speechless.

Scarlett stared at him, tears now falling freely. She was on the verge of breaking down, unable to hold back her sobs or her racing thoughts.

Worried, Vincent moved to hold her again, but she stepped back, raising a hand to stop him. Don’t come near me. I don’t want to see you right now.

Frowning, Vincent spoke quietly, I know you blame me. But Sabrina said she really missed. Vanessa that day. She hadn’t rested well in the hospital, and I thought having Vanessa there might help

His voice trailed off.

Scarlett didn’t let him finish. Through her tears, she gave a bitter laugh. You always bring up Sabrina. Why doesn’t she have your child, then? One that actually belongs to both of you.

Vincent’s frown deepened. I’ve told youVanessa is the only child I’ll ever need. But if you wanted to, we could have another. If you don’t, that’s fine too. There won’t be a second child.”

Scarlett knew he was trying to spare Sabrina the hardship of pregnancy and the risks of childbirth. But why did that mean she could be treated as disposable? Wasn’t she a person too?

From inside the room, Vanessa’s cries had grown hoarse but showed no sign of stopping.
