With her eyes still rimmed red, she pressed him, “Vincent, Vanessa is only five years old. She might be upset with me right now, but she’s just a little girl. What more do you and Sabrina want from her?”

Scarlett was visibly emotional. Seeing her state, Vincent shot back, “Can you try to stay calm? What kid never gets sick? What kid never sees a hospital? And how can you be so sure she caught the flu at the hospital? Couldn’t she have picked it up at school?”

“Vincent, Vanessa is lying in there like this, and you’re still defending Sabrina?”

Vincent turned his face away, unwilling to meet Scarlett’s accusing gaze. In a measured tone, he replied, “I’m only stating facts. You can’t decide where she got sick based on feelings alone. What’s done is done–why keep fixating on how it happened?”

Scarlett pressed a hand to her chest, feeling a sharp, stabbing pang. She took several deep, deliberate breaths, forcing herself to steady down.

Then she looked at Vincent and asked, coolly this time, “You’re always saying I’m not fit to be a mother. Well, Vincent, are you fit to be a father?”

Hearing that, he turned back and stared at her. “What are you trying to say?”

Scarlett only let out a cold, quiet laugh. “Nothing. Just think it over, Vincent. If she’s going to be your only child, you’d better find a conscience.”

Before Vincent could respond, the ward door opened.

The nurse stepped out, wheeling her cart, her forehead glistening with sweat. She looked at Scarlett and Vincent and said, “The IV is placed and running. Please keep an eye on her here. I’ll be back shortly to check her temperature.”

Scarlett answered hoarsely, “Thank you.”

Then she pushed through the door into the room, Vincent following close behind.

Vanessa lay against the pillow, her small face streaked with dried tears, eyes swollen and red. She had stopped crying, but her little body still trembled with occasional shudders.

Scarlett sat beside the bed and gently smoothed Vanessa’s sweat–damp hair. “Are you feeling any better?”

Scarlett didn’t press her. Instead, she took Vanessa’s chubby hand and examined it. There were two raised bumps on the back from the needle, the skin swollen and red, with a tiny bead of blood still visible at the puncture site.

When Vincent leaned in and saw it, his heart clenched. Even accounting for the difficulty of finding veins in children, Vanessa was five–this shouldn’t have been so rough.

Just then, the nurse returned, a digital thermometer in hand.

The sight of her reignited Vincent’s anger. “What kind of injection was that? Was my daughter a practice dummy for you?”

The nurse’s face flushed–bright red. “Sir, I… I’m newly licensed. I’m still improving my technique, and the child was moving quite a bit. I—”

Vincent cut her off, not interested in explanations. He gave her a cold glance and said flatly, “Don’t bother coming in tomorrow.”

The color drained from the nurse’s face. She didn’t know who Vincent was, but something in his bearing and tone terrified her. Fresh out of training and unprepared for such a confrontation, she burst into tears.

The sound of her crying grated on Vincent’s already frayed nerves, but before he could say more, Scarlett stepped between them.

“Vincent, if you want to lose your temper, do it at home. This is a hospital, not your personal

for a meltdown.”

As a medical professional herself, Scarlett understood the nurse’s position all too well. Vanessa’s veins were fine and fragile, and she hadn’t been cooperative–a few–attempts were often unavoidable.

She could understand Vincent’s fear for their daughter, but that didn’t give him the right to berate hospital staff. Besides, Vanessa needed calm and rest now.

Surprisingly, Scarlett’s sharp words seemed to snap Vincent back. He fell silent, his anger receding.

Relieved, the nurse moved forward to take Vanessa’s temperature. The reading still showed over 102.2°F.

Seeing the number, both parents‘ worry deepened. Unsure what to do, the nurse said quietly, “Let me check with the doctor to see if we need to adjust anything.”
