She had simmered that oatmeal for over an hour.
And just like that, Maria’s interference had ruined it all.
Just then, footsteps sounded at the front door.

Before Scarlett could even turn, Maria–who had seen Vincent enter–immediately raised the volume of her wailing.
Vincent walked in frowning, but before he could speak, Maria rushed to accuse, “Vincent, you’re just in time. Look at her–she actually pushed me!”
Vincent’s gaze shifted to Scarlett.
He didn’t say a word, just watched her silently.
Feeling his eyes on her, Scarlett looked up and saw the doubt in them.
At that moment, she simply offered a faint, bitter smile and turned back toward the kitchen.
There had never been any “trust” in Vincent’s eyes when it came to her.
Since it wasn’t there, she didn’t feel like explaining.
Vincent didn’t follow her. Instead, he glanced back at Maria, who was still sitting on the floor.
“I only wanted a little oatmeal,” Maria said, her tone grievance–laced. “She was already making breakfast, but she made such a small portion. She knows exactly how many people live in this house.”
Between the lines, she was painting Scarlett as selfish and inconsiderate.
Vincent didn’t argue. He bent down, helped Maria up, and guided her to the sofa.
“I’ll go check on her,” he said quietly, then walked toward the kitchen.
Scarlett had turned the stove back on. She stood in front of it, sweating and visibly exhausted.
When Vincent came up beside her, he said, “Maria would like some too. You should make a bigger batch.”
Scarlett hadn’t slept all night. She was running on empty.
Hearing his words now, anger surged hot and sudden inside her.

She clenched her jaw, took a sharp breath, and said, “If you want more, make it yourself. I’m only making this for Vanessa.”
Vincent noticed her red–rimmed eyes, the dark circles beneath them.
But her refusal still made him frown.
After a short silence, he said, “You weren’t like this before. Why act this way now? It’s just a bit more oatmeal–it won’t kill you.”
Scarlett rarely lost her temper in front of him, but lately it had become almost routine. “Vincent, you said it yourself—that was before. People change. No one stays the same forever, and neither do I.”
Vincent rarely saw Scarlett lose her temper, but it had become far too common these days.
He couldn’t help wondering if she now saw him and Vanessa as nothing but burdens.
The thought stirred his own frustration. “If you’re not feeling well, see a doctor,” he snapped. “Yelling at me won’t fix anything.”
Scarlett stared at him, stunned. Finally, she let out a hollow laugh. “You’re right, Vincent. I am sick. Sick for ever falling for you. Stupid to think a child could make you stay. I’m a fool—a complete idiot.”
Seeing how raw she was, Vincent realized his words had cut too deep.
He reached for her arm, but Scarlett swatted his hand away. “Don’t touch me,” she said, voice trembling. “I don’t want you to touch me.”
She was shaking all over, the wooden spoon still clutched in her hand. The oats had just been added to the pot; she hadn’t even had time to stir.
Vincent felt a sudden pang of panic. He tried again to reach for her, but before he could make contact, she hurled the spoon at him.
He didn’t dodge in time. It struck his forehead with a sharp crack.
A stinging pain spread instantly. Vincent touched the spot–his fingertips came away smeared with blood.
Scarlett looked at the cut on his brow without a flicker of emotion. Her voice was eerily calm when she finally spoke. “The only tie between you and me is Vanessa. From now on, I won’t- and don’t want to–have anything more to do with you. It’s true, I loved you once. But now, and in the future, you’re just my ex–husband. A stain on my life I can’t erase.”

Without giving him a chance to respond, she turned and walked out of the kitchen.

In the living room, Maria was sitting on the sofa watching TV, casually snacking on sunflower seeds.
Scarlett’s eyes passed over her briefly before she walked straight out of the house.
Once Scarlett was gone, Maria tossed the seeds aside and headed into the kitchen.
She’d heard the argument from outside–not every word, but enough.
As long as they were fighting, Maria was pleased. It only improved her daughter’s chances with
Vincent.
