Vanessa’s cheeks were pale, but she managed a weak smile for her father. I’m okay, Daddy.

Hearing that, a lump formed in Scarlett’s throat, and heavy tears spilled silently down her face.

Seeing her break down, Vincent whispered, Vanessa isn’t critically ill. You don’t have to cry like this.

Scarlett didn’t answershe didn’t want to.

She wasn’t crying just because Vanessa was sick; she was crying because even now, Vanessa only sought to comfort Vincent, not her.

She was just as worried, just as terrified, as he was. Yet her daughter’s comfort went only one

way.

For Vanessa’s sake, Scarlett stayed. She remained in the hospital room through the night. ·

Half an hour later, Vanessa’s fever broke, but she grew increasingly listless.

They finally got her to sleep, but soon after she woke up vomiting, and the high fever spiked again.

That night, the fever came in waves. Scarlett and Vincent barely slept, taking turns comforting her, cooling her forehead, and watching the clock crawl toward morning.

Around five a.m., after the last wave of fever subsided, Vanessa murmured drowsily, Mommy

Hearing her daughter call for her, Scarlett leaned in immediately. I’m right here, sweetheart. Mommy’s right here.

She took Vanessa’s small hand and pressed it gently to her lips.

Vanessa, still half in dreams, had tears clinging to her lashes. Mommy, she whispered hoarsely, I want fish.

Scarlett’s heart melted at once. Okay,” she promised softly. I’ll make it for you today.

Vanessa didn’t say anything else and soon drifted into a deeper sleep.

Seeing her daughter finally resting peacefully, Scarlett let out a long, weary sigh.

Vincent, noticing her exhaustion, said quietly, Go home and get some rest. I’ll stay Vanessa.

Scarlett almost laughed. He had been there through the night, yesbut it was she who had held Vanessa through the worst of it, who had soothed and cooled and comforted.

Now that Vanessa was asleep, he told her to leave. But when their daughter was burning up and crying at two a.m., he hadn’t offered to take over so she could rest.

A flare of unreasonable anger rose in her chest. Get out of my way,she growled.

Vincent’s own temper surfaced. Scarlett, would you try to be reasonable?

She didn’t even look at him. Pushing herself up, she strode out of the room.

I’ll drive you home,” Vincent called after her.

No,she said flatly. Stay with Vanessa.

He didn’t argue further, and she left.

Outside the hospital, the streetlights were still glowing in the dim early light.

Scarlett stood at the curb trying to hail a cab, her head swimming with dizziness.

She hadn’t slept all night, and the emotional strain had left her utterly drainedyet the thought of her sick daughter pushed her forward. She would go home and make Vanessa a proper breakfast.

Finally, a taxi stopped for her. She collapsed into the back seat and fell asleep almost instantly, only waking when the driver gently called to her at her destination.

After paying the fare, she walked into the quiet stillness of Ravenshade Villa.

It was too late to return to Theron Manorshe’d risk waking the whole household. Besides, Vanessa was more accustomed to things here.

In the kitchen, Scarlett moved slowly, fatigue weighing her limbs, but she focused on preparing a gentle, nourishing breakfast for Vanessa. She simmered oatmeal with apples and cinnamon, something easy on the stomach. Once it was ready, she packed it carefully into an insulated container and set it on the dining table.

She was about to prepare a side of soft scrambled eggs when she walked back out and found Maria seated at the table, the lid of the oatmeal container already open.

Maria peered inside and complained, Is this all? It’s not even enough for one person.”

Scarlett didn’t respond. She walked straight to the table, and as she got closer, she firmly took the container from Maria’s hands.

Without a word, she began placing it into a small tote bag.

Maria immediately reached out to grab it back. What’s wrong with you? You can’t even cook enough to feed people properly, and now you’re hoarding it? You should be ashamed!

As Maria tugged at the container, Scarlett held on tightly. In the struggle, the container slipped and fell to the floor, oatmeal splattering across the tiles.

Looking at the mess on the floorthe breakfast she’d made with such care for her sick child- Scarlett’s last thread of patience snapped.

Her eyes redrimmed and blazing, she shoved Maria back by the shoulder. What is wrong with you?

Maria lost her balance and stumbled to the floor. Before Scarlett could even process what had happened, Maria shrieked, Scarlett! Are you trying to kill me?

Scarlett didn’t answer. She just stood there, staring blankly at the oatmeal spilled across the floor.
