After that feeble attempt, Scarlett felt completely drained and sank back onto the mattress.
The brief movement had left her skin clammy with sweat.
Her energy was gone, her mind adrift in a fog, and she had no idea how much time passed before she slipped back into a restless, fevered sleep.
Somewhere in that haze, she heard a faint sound from the direction of the window.
When she managed to open her eyes, she thought she saw a figure approaching through the dim room.
As the silhouette moved into the faint light, Scarlett’s blurred vision gradually recognized him -Damian.
She couldn’t tell if this was a dream or reality; everything felt surreal, almost hallucinatory.
After climbing in through the window, Damian hurried to her bedside.
Seeing her flushed face and sweat–dampened clothes against the rumpled sheets, his heart tightened. He sat on the edge of the mattress and immediately pressed a hand to her forehead.
Her skin was burning hot, the feverish heat searing against his palm.
Alarmed, Damian didn’t hesitate. “Scarlett, look at me,” he said, his voice low but urgent. “Do you know who I am?”
As he spoke, he gently patted her cheek.
Scarlett’s gaze was glazed and distant, clouded with fever and confusion.
Worried she might slip into a febrile seizure, Damian acted quickly. He slid his arms beneath her and lifted her from the bed.
Cradled against him, Scarlett felt weightless and detached, as if floating in a fever dream.
Holding her close, Damian didn’t waste a moment. He turned and headed for the bedroom door.
But just as he stepped into the hallway with Scarlett in his arms, he nearly collided with Nathan, who had just returned home.
Seeing Damian holding his sister, Nathan’s eyes widened in confusion. “Damian?”

Clutching Scarlett tightly, Damian was equally startled to see Nathan, but there was no time for explanations. “Nathan, I’ll explain later. She’s burning up–I need to get her to the ER now.”
Nathan stood frozen at the top of the stairs, his laptop bag still in hand, watching as Damian carried Scarlett toward the staircase.
The questions on his lips died when he caught sight of Scarlett’s flushed, unconscious face. He swallowed hard and stepped aside.
On his way down, Damian also passed Violet, who had just walked in through the front door.
Even with Scarlett in his arms, Damian managed a tense nod. “Violet.”
Seeing him, Violet startled, but she quickly gathered herself. Noticing Scarlett’s limp form, she asked urgently, “What’s wrong with her?”
“High fever,” Damian called back, already moving toward the door. “Taking her to the hospital.”
Violet barely had time to process his words before Damian was out the door, Scarlett held close.
Nathan came down the stairs just then. Meeting Violet’s worried gaze, he said quickly, “Let’s go. We should follow them.”
Right now, all that mattered was Scarlett.
Why Damian had been in her bedroom could be addressed later.

In the quiet early hours of the morning, Scarlett’s eyes fluttered open.
The first thing she saw was the sterile white ceiling of a hospital room, and the sharp, clean scent of antiseptic filled her nose.
She felt a dull sting on the back of her hand. Turning her head slightly, she saw an IV line taped there.
Then, a gentle voice spoke beside her. “Scarlett… you’re awake?”
It was Violet.
Scarlett turned toward the sound and saw Violet seated in a chair to her right, while her left hand was connected to the IV stand.

Parting dry lips, Scarlett managed a hoarse whisper. “Violet.”
Her voice was scratchy and weak, her eyes still glassy with residual fever.

Violet reached over and lightly touched Scarlett’s forehead. “Your fever’s come down,” she said softly. “Do you feel any better?”
Scarlett offered a faint, tired smile. “A little.”
Now that her mind was clearing, a memory surfaced–Damian’s voice in her bedroom. She was certain she had seen him.
Anxious, she asked, “Violet… where’s Damian?”
Hearing her ask about him, Violet hesitated for a moment before answering honestly. “He was the one who brought you here. But after you were checked in and started on the IV, your brother asked to speak with him outside.”
Scarlett’s worry deepened. “I need to see him.”
If Damian had brought her here, then Nathan must have discovered him in her room.
Given Nathan’s protective nature, the conversation wouldn’t have been pleasant—it might have even gotten heated.
Scarlett was worried about Damian, and it showed in her strained expression.
Violet gently brushed a damp strand of hair from Scarlett’s temple. “You still have a fever, sweetie. Just rest for now,” she said quietly. “Your brother wouldn’t actually hurt him. They just needed to talk.”
Scarlett ached all over, and her throat felt raw and scraped. Hearing–Violet’s calming words, she allowed herself to relax slightly, sinking back into the pillow.
