Chapter 280 Night Watch
Nathan did have a short temper, but he usually listened to Violet.
If Violet said he wouldn’t resort to violence, he probably wouldn’t.

Lying in the hospital bed, Scarlett felt tears well up unexpectedly, tracing warm paths down her cheeks.
Seeing her cry, Violet leaned closer, concerned. “What’s wrong, sweetie?”
As she spoke, she gently brushed the tears from the corners of Scarlett’s eyes.
A heavy, stifled feeling sat in Scarlett’s chest. She looked at Violet and whispered, “I just… I want to go home.”
She still couldn’t shake what had happened earlier that day.
Seeing her so downcast, Violet’s heart ached. She softly stroked Scarlett’s hair. “Just rest a little longer. Once you’re better, I’ll take you home.”
The doctor had explained that Scarlett needed to stay hospitalized for a few days–at least until her fever broke completely and she finished the course of IV antibiotics.
Scarlett didn’t argue. She simply nodded, her voice quiet. “Okay. I’ll listen to you.”
Noticing Scarlett’s chapped lips, Violet smoothed her hair once more. “Just lie still. I’ll go get
you some warm water.”
It was the peak of flu season–the temperature had dropped sharply across the city, and cases were spreading widely.
Scarlett felt a pang of worry. “Violet, please wear a mask. I don’t want you to catch this from
me.”
“I will, don’t worry,” Violet assured her. “Just rest. I’ll be right back.”
Scarlett gave a soft hum of acknowledgment and closed her eyes again.
Her body felt heavy and weak, her thoughts drifting in a feverish haze.
Somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, she dreamed of Damian–Nathan confronting him, maybe even hitting him.
When she jerked awake, she was drenched in cold sweat.

Thinking it was Violet returning, Scarlett didn’t have the energy to turn. Instead, she spoke toward the wall. “Violet… are you sure my brother won’t hurt Damian?”
As soon as the words left her lips, she heard a soft, familiar chuckle, followed by Damian’s voice. “Oh? Worried about me, are you?”
Hearing him, Scarlett turned her head slowly. “Damian… what are you doing here?”
Her hair was damp with sweat, her face still flushed.
Damian stood beside the bed dressed in dark athletic wear, his short hair slightly tousled. A faint, warm smile touched his
eyes.
He had one of those strikingly handsome faces–sharp features, a strong jawline, a look you didn’t see every day.
Even when he seemed a bit like a troublemaker, his smile held none of that edge. Instead, it softened into something handsome, almost gentle.
Damian pulled the chair closer and sat down, his long legs bent casually. The athletic jacket hugged his lean frame. His expression turned sincere as he lowered his voice. “I’m fine. Really. Don’t worry about me.”
Scarlett didn’t press further. Seeing no visible injuries, she murmured, “You should I’ll be alright.”

home.
She said it mostly out of concern–if Nathan saw him here again, things could get heated.
Damian picked up a cup with a straw from the bedside table and brought it to her lips. “I’m not going anywhere tonight. I’m staying right here with you. Here, have some water. It’ll help your throat.”
Instead of drinking, Scarlett frowned slightly. “Where’s Violet?”
Damian gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “She and your brother went home.”
Scarlett looked even more confused. “But… how?”
Knowing Violet, she wouldn’t just leave her alone in the hospital.
Damian answered honestly. “Violet convinced your brother. They left together.”
Scarlett wasn’t entirely sure whether to believe him, but the fact remained–Violet wasn’t here.
Too tired to dwell on it, she let the matter drop. She still felt awful and didn’t have the energy

These past few days had been the height of the flu outbreak. Scarlett had likely caught it from Vanessa.
Damian was staying here without any real protection. She felt grateful but uneasy. “Damian, you should go. If you stay, you might catch it too.”
But Damian just shook his head lightly. “If I get it, I get it. That’s just how it goes. Besides, it’s a little late to send me away now.”
He had a point–he’d already been in close contact with her. A little longer wouldn’t change much.
When Scarlett stayed silent, Damian continued, his tone softening. “Maybe it’d even be better if I did catch it. Then I could stay right here in the same room with you–take care of you, keep you company.”
Scarlett didn’t know how to respond to that.
After a long pause, she finally looked up and met his eyes. “Damian… why do you have to be like this?”
