He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his words dissolving into muffled, shaky breaths.

Seeing Damian like this, Violet felt a pang of sympathy. She reached over and gently patted his shoulder. “Mr. Langley, she’ll be alright. Don’t worry so much.”

Damian hardly heard her. Soft, choked sounds escaped him.

When the elevator reached the first floor, he carried Scarlett straight into the ER.

After the doctors examined her, they confirmed she was stable and would wake up soon.

Even with their reassurance, Damian kept pacing anxiously back and forth in the ER hallway, his figure moving restlessly under the fluorescent lights.

Finally, a nurse came out and said, “Sir, she’s awake.”

Hearing that, Damian shot into the room.

Scarlett had just come to, still feeling dizzy and out of it.

But Damian didn’t hesitate–he rushed in, pulled her gently into his arms, and held her close.

A shaky, frightened whisper brushed her ear, again and again. “Scarlett, please don’t scare me like that again. I was so scared. Really scared.”

As he spoke, warm tears slid down his cheeks.

Scarlett felt the dampness against her skin–Damian’s tears.

Coming back to herself, she remembered what had just happened.

She’d always doubted Damian’s kindness, thinking it might be an act. But in this moment, she felt the real, raw weight of his fear.

If he didn’t truly care… why would he cry?

Scarlett stayed still for a long moment. Damian was still trembling against her. Unable to bear it, she slowly raised a hand and patted his back.

“Damian, it’s just the flu. It’s not that serious. Please don’t cry.”
