Whether Vanessa was doing well or poorly, Scarlett couldn’t simply stop caring.

As a mother herself, Violet understood that worry perfectly. “I’ll go with you,” she said.

Scarlett knew Violet was concerned and simply nodded. “Alright.”

Though Damian was tidying up, he’d overheard their conversation.

Seeing both women preparing to visit Vanessa, he spoke up quickly, “Then I’ll come too.”

It wasn’t that he was worried about anyone else–only Scarlett.

After a brief hesitation, Scarlett quietly declined.

Damian didn’t argue. Even if she said no, he’d find a way to keep an eye on her.

Supported by Violet, Scarlett made her way to the pediatric unit.

From a distance, she spotted Vincent and Lily sitting silently on a bench in the waiting area.

Hearing their footsteps, Vincent looked up. Seeing how pale and weak Scarlett appeared, his frown deepened slightly.

The accusatory questions he’d prepared died on his tongue.

Vanessa was stable now–arguing felt pointless. He stayed quiet.

When Vincent didn’t speak, Scarlett asked first, her voice strained, “How is Vanessa?”

“She’s in the ICU,” Vincent replied tersely.

Scarlett’s temper flickered. “I asked about her condition, not her location.”

Hearing her sharp tone, Vincent couldn’t hold back any longer. “You have time to ask me now— why didn’t you come when I texted you?”

Scarlett let out a hollow, bitter laugh. “Are you sure Vanessa even wants me here? The people she asks for are you and Sabrina. If I stayed, would it really make her happy?”

Vincent ignored her question. His eyes were red–rimmed as he said, “You’re still her mother.”

She felt her body begin to tremble, barely able to stand. Violet tightened her grip, holding her steady.

Staring into Vincent’s cold, bloodshot eyes, Scarlett drew a shaky breath. “Vincent, I’m a person, not a machine. I can’t revolve solely around Vanessa forever.”

Exhaustion made her voice crack.

Vincent looked up at her, fighting to control his own emotions. “So you can just ignore whether your daughter lives or dies? You saw my messages—”

But before he could finish, Scarlett broke. Her voice rose, raw and strained, cutting him off. “And who has ever cared–whether I live or die?”

The force of her shout made the veins in her neck stand out. Red streaked the whites of her

eyes.

As the words left her, a fit of coughing seized her. She covered her mouth, and when she pulled her hand away, a smear of blood stained her palm.

Violet quickly passed her a tissue, gently rubbing her back. “Scarlett, don’t strain yourself. If others won’t look out for you, you have to look out for yourself.”

Lily, watching in alarm, stood up instinctively–but Violet turned toward Vincent, her own voice tight with anger.

“Scarlett has been running a high fever since last night. I only told her Vanessa was in the ICU after I saw you. The moment she heard, she insisted on coming. She nearly fell several times on the way here, but she still came. If you think she doesn’t care about her daughter, I don’t believe it. If she didn’t care, she wouldn’t have risked her own health to be here.”

Then, softening her tone, she said to Scarlett, “Come on, let me take you back to your room.”

Too weak to argue, Scarlett simply nodded.

As Violet helped her turn to leave, she looked back at Vincent one last time. “Vincent… think about what you’re doing.”

Hearing Violet’s words, Vincent’s anger began to dissolve.

Seeing Scarlett like this–she clearly wasn’t in much better shape than Vanessa.

He still cared underneath it all; he just didn’t know how to say it.
