Damian studied Scarlett’s profile, suddenly unable to look away. He leaned in slightly, catching her scent, and said with a playful, intimate smile, “I’ve got more where that came from. You’ll see in time.
Watching them exchange affectionate glances right in front of him, Zachary grumbled, “Hey, no fair–two against one!”
Damian straightened up and glanced at him, lifting his chin slightly. “Then call for backup.”
“Where am I supposed to find backup?” Zachary retorted, even more exasperated. “I’ve been single for years!”
Damian seized the moment to tease him. “You should be embarrassed saying that. Planning to stay alone forever?”
Zachary replied while tidying up the game board, “If I can’t find someone right for me, I’d rather end up alone.”
Just then, a knock sounded at the door.
Knowing it was Claire, Scarlett called out, “Come in.”
The door opened, and Claire stepped inside, her arms laden with shopping bags.
Zachary glanced toward the sound. There stood Claire, wearing a baseball cap, a casual hoodie, fitted jeans, and a crossbody bag. Her outfit was simple, her makeup minimal–just a touch of foundation and lip color.
Though dressed plainly, her figure was proportionate and tall, and her deep–set eyes held a striking intensity. Zachary had seen plenty of women, but Claire caught him off guard.
When Damian saw it was Claire, he instinctively looked back at Scarlett.
She met his gaze evenly. “Damian, you and Zachary should go take care of your own things. I’ll be fine with Claire here.”
Sitting beside the bed, Damian went still. Even he could read between the lines–she was asking him to leave.
He had no intention of going. Frowning, he said, “I’m not busy. I want to stay with you. I worry when you’re sick.”

Scarlett’s expression remained placid, neither cold nor warm. “Go home. It’ll be easier for Claire to help me.”
Damian’s frown deepened. “But you agreed last night…”
He started to say she’d accepted him as hers, but Scarlett cut him off. “I had a fever last night. I wasn’t thinking clearly. Mr. Langley, you shouldn’t take certain words to heart.”
He knew she was pushing him away, but he refused to budge. “I’m not leaving. If you want Ms. Wright to stay, that’s fine. I’ll just be here in the room. Pretend I’m not even here.”
After entering, Claire placed the lilies she’d brought on the bedside table and the fruit on the side table.
Seeing Damian’s stubbornness, she felt a flicker of surprise–a man so proud, now acting so humble before Scarlett.
Zachary’s eyes hadn’t left Claire since she walked in. His admiration was open and direct, yet not overbearing.
Noticing his gaze, Claire looked over and gave a slight, polite nod.
Seeing she couldn’t persuade Damian, Scarlett relented quietly. “Fine. Do as you like.”
If he wouldn’t leave willingly, she’d find another way.
Then she turned to Claire. “Claire, I’d like to get some air outside.”
Claire moved to the bedside and bent to help her up.
But Damian, who had been watching Scarlett closely, asked in a low voice, “You’re not fully recovered. Where do you think you’re going?”
Scarlett pushed back the covers and met his eyes. “I’m going to see Vincent. He stayed with Vanessa all night–it’s my turn to relieve him. He needs rest.”
She said it deliberately, for Damian’s benefit–solely to make him leave.
As she swung her legs over the side of the bed, Damian suddenly caught her wrist. His gaze turned sharp, his voice cool. “Scarlett, you’re still unwell. I’m not letting you go see them.”
Scarlett didn’t struggle. She held his stare and said clearly, “Vincent is my husband. Vanessa is my daughter. If I don’t go see them, who should I see? You? And who are you to me?”
The air in the room grew tense, charged with the standoff between them.
Zachary finally tore his eyes from Claire and looked at Damian. He could tell–Damian was

And so was Scarlett.

Damian didn’t release her. Instead, his grip tightened. His deep, intense eyes locked onto hers as he said, his voice low and deliberate, “Yes. You see me. Because I’m the one who cares for you, Scarlett. The only one.”
