Scarlett looked at him helplessly. “Damian, you…”

Barefoot on the cool floor, she said firmly, “Forget last night. I never agreed to any of the roles you decided for me.”

Then she slipped on her shoes, took Claire’s hand, and said, “Let’s go.”

Claire, confused but supportive, followed her lead.

As they reached the door, Zachary spoke up, “Scarlett, if there’s some misunderstanding about Damian, you should talk it out with him. I’ve known him for years–you’re the only one he’s ever really cared about.”

Scarlett paused. After a moment, she turned back to Zachary. “Thank you for coming today, Zachary. I appreciate it. And thank you, Mr. Langley, as well. But there’s no misunderstanding

between us.”

She turned to leave again. Zachary looked as if he wanted to say more, but Damian stopped him quietly. “Let it go, Zachary.”

Frowning, Zachary insisted, “She’s obviously misunderstood something. Let me explain.”

Damian held his friend’s arm. He lowered his gaze, a bitter smile touching his lips. “Vincent has always been the one in her heart.”

“You should still talk to her,” Zachary urged.

Damian shook his head. He looked toward the empty doorway where Scarlett had disappeared and said, his voice rough with emotion, “I lost, Zachary.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Zachary said fiercely. “You’re Damian. You don’t lose.”

Downstairs, Scarlett and Claire stepped out of the elevator and walked into the hospital garden.

When they reached a small gazebo, Claire asked quietly, “I thought we were going to see Vincent and Vanessa?”

Scarlett sat on a stone bench without answering. Her eyes were red.

Sensing her sorrow, Claire sat beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “What happened?”

Scarlett didn’t explain. She simply leaned into Claire’s shoulder. “I just need a hug.”

Claire didn’t press. She gently stroked Scarlett’s hair. “You should have told me you were in the hospital sooner. I would have come immediately.”

“I’m sorry, Claire,” Scarlett murmured.

Claire gave a soft laugh. “What you said back there… You didn’t really mean it, did you?”

Scarlett stayed quiet for a moment, then whispered, “Let’s just treat it as a dream. It’ll be over when we wake up.”
