While soothing Vanessa, Vincent glanced back at Scarlett. Seeing her protective stance, he couldn’t help a faint smile.

She claimed she didn’t care anymore, yet here she was, standing guard in front of him and Vanessa.

Only once the dog was completely out of sight did Scarlett finally relax her tense posture.

She straightened up slowly and turned to look at Vincent and Vanessa.

Noticing Vincent smiling at her, Scarlett belatedly realized what that smile might mean.

But then it struck her-why would Vincent even care what she thought?

Before she could fully dismiss the idea, Vincent chuckled softly and said, “See? You still care about us.”

After a pause, Scarlett calmly adjusted her bag on her shoulder. She met his gaze and said, “In a situation like that, I would’ve helped even if they were strangers.”

Vincent responded with certainty, “Maybe so. But your first instinct just now doesn’t lie. You still care about me, and about Vanessa.”

Scarlett was almost amused.

How had she never noticed before just how arrogant he could be?

She didn’t feel like arguing about it. Instead, she reminded him coolly, “If we don’t hurry, Ms. Monroe’s leg might really be in trouble. Wouldn’t you agree?”

As soon as she finished, Vanessa-still in Vincent’s arms-grew anxious first.

She looked up, touched his stubbled chin, and said worriedly, “Daddy, let’s Sabrina now.”

Vincent lowered his head, letting her small hand brush his chin, and smiled gently. “Okay, sweetheart. We’ll go right now.”

With that, he carried Vanessa toward the car.

Just then, Scarlett spoke to his retreating back, “Vincent, you go ahead. I don’t want to go.”

Vincent stopped and turned to face her, his voice low. “But you already agreed to come.”

Scarlett stood a few yards away, arms loosely at her sides. “My being there would only interrupt your time with Ms. Monroe.”

Vincent’s brows drew together. “It’s not a date. I’ll just make sure she’s alright and then we’ll leave.”

“I want to go home,” Scarlett insisted. “Please don’t make me do something I don’t want to do.”

Vincent thought of Damian back at the house. A shadow passed over his eyes. home you want to go back to?” he asked, his voice rough.

Scarlett nodded. “Yes.”

Vincent glanced down at Vanessa, who was growing restless in his arms.

After a brief pause, he told her softly, “Vanessa, wait in the car for a minute, okay? Daddy needs to talk to Mommy.”

Vanessa started to protest, but the intense look in Vincent’s eyes made her swallow her words.

In the end, she just nodded quietly. “Okay.”

Once she was settled in the back seat, Vincent clicked the doors locked.
