But Sabrina’s tears only fell harder. “What if I’m permanently injured?” she whispered between

sobs.

Vincent pressed a finger lightly to her lips. “Don’t think like that. You won’t be.”

Sabrina looked up at him, her cheeks flushed. “But if I were… would you still-”

Vincent didn’t let her finish. “If that happened,” he said, his voice low but clear, “I’d take care of you. For as long as you needed.”

Sabrina’s heart settled instantly.

A soft, almost luminous relief brightened her eyes.

Even with Scarlett standing right there, Sabrina felt she had won this round.

After closing the passenger door, Vincent turned to find Scarlett still standing beside the car, making no move to get in.

“Get in,” he said to her. “Keep Vanessa company in the back.”

Scarlett didn’t reply. She simply opened the rear door and slid inside.

Vanessa had settled on the right side but was leaning toward the front. She slipped her small hand through the gap beside the seat and gently held Sabrina’s fingers.

“Sabrina, does it hurt a lot?”

“It’s manageable, sweetheart.”

“Let me blow on it for you. Mommy says blowing makes it better.”

“Oh, honey, I’m up here. It’s okay, really.”

“Alright… but it’ll feel better once the doctors look at it.”

Scarlett heard every word of their exchange.

A humorless laugh threatened to escape her lips. Wasn’t Sabrina a doctor herself?

How bad the injury was-shouldn’t she know better than anyone?

But Scarlett didn’t call her out. There was no point.

Soon, the car pulled up at the hospital.

Vincent carried Sabrina straight to the ER. Following the physician’s orders, she was taken for an X-ray, which confirmed a hairline fracture.

The doctor explained to Vincent, “She’ll need a cast. It’s a clean break-should heal without any issues.”

Vincent agreed to the treatment plan without hesitation.

While the cast was being applied, Scarlett sat on a bench outside the treatment room, scrolling absently through her phone.

Vincent and Vanessa stayed inside with Sabrina.

At one point, a soft cry of pain came from the room. Scarlett heard Vincent’s low murmur in response. She glanced up and, through the partly open door, saw him standing close to the exam table, Sabrina’s face pressed against his abdomen as she trembled.

Scarlett looked away just as her phone screen lit up with a message from Diana.

“Are you holding up okay?”

Scarlett typed quickly, “I’m fine.”

Then she added, “What about Damian? Did he leave?”

Diana replied, “Yes, but not before tossing that card Vincent gave me. He left another one instead a black card. Said the PIN is the date you two first met.”

The date they met?

Scarlett couldn’t even recall it. A ripple of anxiety passed through her. “You didn’t accept it, did you?”

“Of course I didn’t feel right taking it, but he just set it down and walked out before I could refuse.”

Scarlett’s unease deepened. “Keep it somewhere safe, Mom. I’ll find a way to return it to him in a few days.”

“Alright, honey. I’ll put it away.”

Scarlett held her phone tightly. After a moment, she asked, “Did Damian say anything else?”

Diana didn’t hide it. “He said to consider it an engagement gift for our family.”

Reading those words, Scarlett felt a strange disconnect, as if they were meant for someone else’s life.

She stared blankly for a few seconds before finally responding, “I understand.”

Just as she turned off her screen, a low, husky voice came from above her. “Who were you texting?”

It was Vincent.

Scarlett looked up. He was leaning down, his handsome face half in shadow under the muted hospital lights. His features were softened but his gaze felt sharp, intent.

Pushing down her discomfort, Scarlett answered evenly, “My mother.”

As soon as she spoke, Vincent held out his hand. “Let me see.”

Scarlett paused, frowning. “See what?”

Vincent’s hand remained outstretched. “We shouldn’t have secrets. Not now.”

Scarlett almost laughed. She didn’t answer but instead glanced toward the treatment room, where Sabrina’s soft whimpers were still audible. “Shouldn’t you be focusing on your friend right now?” she said, lightly stressing the last word as if underlining it.

Vincent’s eyes stayed fixed on her. “It’s a minor injury. She can handle it.”

Hearing him say that, a cold ripple ran through Scarlett.

She never thought she’d hear Vincent speak so dismissively about an injured Sabrina.
