Scarlett frowned, studying Vincent’s face, trying to see past his calm exterior-to understand what was really going on behind those guarded eyes.

But his expression gave nothing away, as unreadable as stone.

What was he truly thinking?

Inside the treatment room, the doctor was carefully applying Sabrina’s cast. The pain had brought a sheen of sweat to her skin, and tears streaked silently down her cheeks.

Vanessa stood watching, her own eyes growing red and glossy with sympathetic hurt.

Seeing Sabrina’s suffering, Vanessa suddenly stretched out her slender little arm. “Sabrina, if it hurts that much, you can bite me. Maybe it’ll help you feel better.”

Sabrina looked at the small arm offered to her. Part of her wanted to clamp down on it right then, but remembering Vincent was just outside, she forced a frail, gentle smile instead. “Oh, sweetheart, just having you here makes the pain less already.”

But Vanessa stubbornly kept her arm outstretched, her voice trembling with tears. “Just bite it! I don’t care if I lose my arm, as long as you stop hurting and get better.”

Sabrina paused, caught off guard by the depth of the child’s devotion.

That flicker of genuine warmth, however, didn’t last long.

After everything she’d done for this father and daughter, they owed her this kind of care.

But Vincent…

Sabrina glanced toward the doorway, catching only a sliver of Vincent’s shirt from where she lay.

Scarlett was probably standing right beside him.

The thought twisted inside her, sharpening her sense of grievance.

Noticing Sabrina’s troubled look, Vanessa called out anxiously, “Sabrina?”

Sabrina snapped back to the moment. She looked at Vanessa and chided softly, “Shh now,

darling. Little girls shouldn’t say such frightening things.”

Vanessa cried harder, tears falling freely. “But I just want you to be okay!”

With that, she threw her small arms around Sabrina in a tight, desperate hug.

Sabrina genuinely wanted to shove the clingy, sobbing child away, but she held back.

Vincent was outside. Vanessa was irritating her up close.

Turning it over, Sabrina decided it might be simplest to just faint.

No sooner had the idea formed than she let her body go limp, sinking back against the exam bed.

Vanessa was terrified. After a stunned second, she screamed toward the door, “Daddy! Daddy! Sabrina fainted!”

Vincent, who had been standing with Scarlett in the doorway, immediately turned and rushed into the room at Vanessa’s

cry.

Scarlett didn’t look inside. She only heard Vincent’s urgent voice calling, “Sabrina?”

And then Vanessa’s heartbroken sobs joining in, “Sabrina… wake up…”

Her husband and her daughter were consumed with worry for another woman.

Whatever dismissive thing Vincent had said earlier, Scarlett now felt sure he still cared for Sabrina deeply.

And as for Vanessa’s earlier declaration-offering her own arm-Scarlett felt a heavy, smothering pressure in her chest.

Her own daughter was willing to sacrifice herself for another woman’s comfort.

But hadn’t Vanessa’s very life come from her?

The thought left her agitated and profoundly unsettled.

The anxious voices from the room grew too much to bear.

She stood up and walked slowly down the hall.

Finding a stairwell, Scarlett pushed open the small access window and looked out over the city.

The glittering metropolis stretched out below-streams of taillights, glowing pockets of nightlife, towers of steel and glass against the dark sky.

It all looked so alive, so full of possibility, and yet she alone felt as if a stone were lodged in her heart.

Scarlett leaned back against the window frame, letting the cool night air tangle through her

hair.

She looked down at her phone, scrolling absently through short videos.

But every clip seemed to be about breakups, divorces, or children left feeling rootless after their parents split.

Irritated, she turned the screen off. When she looked up, she suddenly met Vincent’s deep, watchful gaze.

Seeing him, she tried to press down the frustration rising within her.

After a beat, she asked flatly, “What are you doing here?”

Vincent stood at the entrance to the stairwell. “I couldn’t see you,” he said. “I was worried, so I came looking.”

It was the first time Scarlett could remember Vincent expressing concern for her whereabouts.

And yet, she found she couldn’t trust the words.

After years of longing for just this kind of attention, now that it seemed to arrive, all she felt was skepticism.

She didn’t acknowledge his concern. Instead, she asked doubtfully, “Don’t you need to be with Sabrina?”

Vincent replied, “The doctor gave her something for the pain. She’s awake now, and the cast is finished. Vanessa’s keeping her company.”

Hearing that, Scarlett asked, “Can we leave, then?”

Noticing her eagerness to go, Vincent gave a single nod. “We can.”

With that, Scarlett walked toward him, already moving past as she said, “Then let’s go. I want to head back now.”
